Evaluating Benefits 101 - Small Business CEO

The current business environment is a difficult one. While businesses are still seeking to expand, prudent business executives and owners are also looking to economize in every way possible. These cost-cutting efforts will affect every department in a company, especially HR, as most companies spend the largest part of their revenue on salaries and wages.

Evaluating Employee Benefits

Not only will salaries and wages be tightly controlled but the depth and range of benefits packages will also be reconsidered every year. Lessening benefits and thus lowering premiums may seem the most obvious way to achieve savings but there are hidden costs that should also be considered before reducing a company?s benefits package. These hidden costs involve the recruiting, hiring and training of employees and can have a significant effect on the financial health and bottom line of a company.

Lower Premiums Don?t Necessarily Mean Lessened Benefits

It seems an almost immutable law of the business world that if a company or its employees pay less in premiums that it will receive less in benefits. While this notion is typical, utilizing an outsource HR vendor or Professional Employer Organization (PEO) can change the dynamics for the better.

In many cases, an HR vendor can, because of economies of scale, reduce administrative costs and thus reduce premiums to some degree. More importantly, an outsourced HR vendor brings consolidated purchasing power to their negotiations with insurance companies. Since the HR vendor represents many companies and therefore many employees, they can achieve significant reductions in premium costs without negatively affecting the benefit packages.

Lessened Benefits DO Mean Lower Quality Candidates

For many employees, especially younger ones, the allure of benefits pales in comparison to the salary or wage associated with a job. However, there are many, more mature employees who recognize the advantages of a well-designed and affordable benefits package.

A business owner or executive should recognize that people choose a job for specific reasons, and are not always entirely focused on which employer offers them the highest salary. While a superior benefits package may not always entice a higher quality employee to apply, a meager one can unintentionally deter many highly qualified potential applicants.

Superior Benefits Packages Attract and RETAIN More Qualified Applicants

More qualified applicants mean more qualified hires. In general, these employees are secure in their positions, and are more likely to train faster, stay longer, and be more productive. The savings in ?soft? costs that accrue due to higher employee morale and lowered turnover should not be underestimated. A superior benefits package can be instrumental in perfecting this aspect of the human resources equation.

Similarly, more highly qualified employees are most likely more familiar with the rules and regulations that affect their job, and are therefore more likely to follow company policy. In short, they are less likely to err when it comes to business laws, regulations, or company procedures. The result is lower workplace accidents, fines, and penalties levied by governmental agencies, and fewer harassment or other types of lawsuits. While not entirely an issue for some business niches, it is a significant benefit in many fields.

A Menu Plan Can Keep Benefits Affordable for Everyone

The multi-generational composition of most workforces demands that a company?s benefits package allow for customization. Different time-off options, medical benefits, educational opportunities, and other features can be chosen from a benefits menu, and unwanted options can simply be declined. The result is a benefits package that more closely fits the needs of every employee and also significantly reduces premiums.

For example, singles are more interested in investment options, families need the best health care plans, and seniors are probably looking for both. The only affordable way to accommodate these individual needs is to provide a menu plan. Even the simple expedient of offering separate medical, dental, and vision plans can make a difference to certain categories of applicants.

In short, the ability to ?pick and choose? from a variety of benefits options allows your company to attract the broadest range of top tier candidates while keeping those benefits affordable for both the potential employees and your company.

Benefits Can be the Tiebreaker

While a good benefits package may not overcome a significantly deficient compensation package, it can mean the difference between candidates choosing your company?s total compensation package over another?s. This fact presides in every business environment, good or bad.

At times there may be a glut of applicants, but the best talent is always in demand. A superior benefits package will attract them and, even more importantly, keep them from leaving after you have invested time and energy in their recruitment, hiring, and development.

In the same vein, properly trained and developed employees are less likely to run afoul of company policies or government regulations, saving the company time, expenses, and possibly an otherwise excellent employee. Lastly, a superior benefits package engenders better morale and a more productive workforce.

The Result

Each of the relatively intangible factors will considerably diminish the ?soft? costs to a company. The CFO may not be able to point to a line item where the savings appear, but the results will show on the bottom line.

This fact, when coupled with the great possibility that premiums can be kept constant or reduced, is a very strong incentive for a business owner or HR executive to examine the possibilities offered by an outsourced HR vendor or Professional Employer Organization.

Bulgaria president calls May election after protests

SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria will hold an early election on May 12, the president said on Thursday, seeking a way out of a political crisis that could undermine the Balkan country's economic stability.

Prime Minister Boiko Borisov resigned last week after nationwide protests against high electricity prices, and plans to cut prices and revoke the distribution license of Czech utility CEZ could deter other investors.

The European Union's poorest country has kept its debt and deficit low to maintain confidence in a currency peg to the euro, introduced in 1997 after mass protests against hyperinflation toppled a leftist government.

But demonstrations by tens of thousands of Bulgarians have already forced some concessions and whoever wins the election will be under considerable pressure to spend and raise living standards that are less than half the EU average.

"I believe that the necessary key changes in the laws should be decided by a new parliament. The decision is to hold elections," President Rosen Plevneliev told a packed session of parliament.

The average wage is just 400 euros a month and pension less than half that, so electricity prices - although among the EU's lowest - bite particularly deep, particularly in winter when many people use it to heat their homes.

All major Bulgarian parties have said they do not want to form a government in the current parliament.

Encouraging Strong Relationships Rewards Everyone - DirectCourse

Posted on by Jenise

No one wants to be alone in the world, and yet helping foster healthy relationships for people with disabilities is something that is often overlooked.

Two recent articles from major news sites examine the benefits and the challenges of loving relationships involving people with intellectual disabilities. In ?A Life Defined Not By Disability, But By Love,? National Public Radio examines how Bonnie Brown, a Philadelphia woman with intellectual disability, raised her daughter, Myra, and how this relationship profoundly affects both. Like any parent, Bonnie encourages her daughter in school, is a regular attendee at parent-teacher conferences, and is proud to
see her daughter thrive.

And the feeling is mutual. ?I want you to know that even though our situation is unique, I?m happy that I am in it because I am happy that I am with you,? Myra says about her mother in the article.

When persons with intellectual disabilities fall in love and seek marriage, challenges can arise, from society at large, and even from within the family. The Washington Post?s Ellen McCarthy examines the story of Bill Ott and Shelley Belgard, a now-married couple, each with an intellectual disability, who fell in love in high school, and faced numerous struggles in trying to make a life together. According to the article, Bill and Shelley took their time developing their relationship, moving in together, and even seeing a couples? counselor. This finally convinced Shelley?s mother that theirs was a good match. ?I wanted to make sure this was the right person for Shelley,? she is quoted as saying.

Boehner attacks Senate on sequestration

House Speaker John Boehner (Alex Wong/Getty Images)

With across-the-board federal spending cuts set to kick in on Friday, House Speaker John Boehner reiterated his plea for the Senate to pass an alternative to the sequester, calling on senators to get "off their ass."

"We should not have to move a third bill before the Senate gets off their ass and begins to do something," Boehner said on Tuesday. "It's time for the Senate to act."

Last year, the House passed two bills that would replace the $85 billion in automatic cuts known as the sequester, which are set to begin March 1. But the Republican-led chamber has declined to act since the new Congress convened this year, waiting for the Democrat-led Senate to pass its own replacement bill. The upper chamber is expected to vote on two competing bills before the March 1 deadline: A Democratic measure that achieves the same amount of deficit reduction with tax increases and a Republican version that contains only spending cuts.

Boehner added that he's prepared to keep the House in session this week to work with the Senate on a sequester alternative, but it's unlikely both chambers will be able to finish work on a bill by Friday.

(AP Photo/Michael Dwyer, file)

(AP) ? Home improvement retailer Lowe's Cos. credits cleanup efforts after Superstorm Sandy and its new pricing strategy for fourth-quarter earnings that surpassed Wall Street expectations.

The results are a sign that people are beginning to feel better about spending money on their homes as the housing market slowly recovers. Analysts will be watching Lowe's larger rival Home Depot's earnings report on Tuesday to see if its results show a similar story.

Lowe's CEO Robert Niblock said the company is seeing a pickup in spending even in areas of the country hit hardest by the housing slump, like Florida, Arizona and California.

"Rising home values have given homeowners additional confidence in spending on their homes," Niblock said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Lowe's net income fell 11 percent from last year's quarter, which included an extra week of revenue. Its earnings forecast for the year was below expectations but its revenue projection beat the consensus.

Mooresville, N.C.-based Lowe's has revamped its pricing structure, offering what it says are permanent low prices on many items across the store instead of fleeting discounts. It has also focused on hiring more workers and improving its inventory. In January it said it planned to hire 45,000 seasonal workers ahead of its busy spring season and add 9,000 part time employees on a permanent basis.

In a call with analysts, Chief Customer Officer Greg Bridgeford said the pricing strategy helped spur strong sales of cabinets and countertops, tools and outdoor power equipment.

During the quarter, the number of transactions fell 6.9 percent, mainly due to the extra week in the quarter a year ago. But average ticket rose 2.1 percent to $62.37.

Lowe's net income totaled $288 million, or 26 cents per share, for the three months ended Feb. 1. That's down from $322 million, or 26 cents per share, a year ago. Analysts expected 23 cents per share, according to FactSet.

There were 11 percent fewer shares outstanding in the latest quarter than a year ago. That increases the value of each share. An extra week in the quarter last year had boosted year-ago earnings by 5 cents per share.

Revenue fell 5 percent to $11.05 billion from $11.63 billion. Analysts expected $10.85 billion. Revenue in stores open at least one year rose 1.9 percent. The measure is a key gauge of a retailer's fiscal health because it excludes stores that open or close during the year.

Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom said the quarter was generally good and in line with his expectations, helped by better gross margins ? the amount of each dollar in revenue a company actually keeps ? and a lower share count.

Standard & Poor analyst Michael Souers kept his "Sell" recommendation on the stock.

"While we see a modest recovery in housing, we see rising interest rates as a threat to home refinancing, a key driver of remodeling," he said.

For the fiscal year, net income rose 7 percent to $1.96 billion, or $1.69 per share, from $1.84 billion, or $1.43 per share. Revenue edged up to $50.52 billion from $50.21 billion last year.

Lowe's, which operates 1,754 stores in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, expects fiscal 2013 net income of $2.05 per share. Analysts expect $2.10 per share.

The company expects revenue to rise 4 percent, implying revenue of $52.54 billion. Analysts expect $51.69 billion.

Shares slipped 2 cents to $37.65 in morning trading Monday. They have traded in a 52-week range of $24.76 to $39.98.

FlaccoGetty Images

If the Ravens want to make Joe Flacco the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, and if Flacco is satisfied to barely clear the bar set last year by Saints quarterback Drew Brees, there?s a quick and easy way to get this contract done.

Using Brees? 2012 contract as the starting point, Flacco would get a $40 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $5 million in 2013, and base salaries of $10 million in 2014, $13 million in 2015, $15 million in 2016, and $18 million in 2017.

Under the rules of signing-bonus proration, $8 million would be applied to each year?s salary cap.? That would result in a cap number of $13 million in 2013, $18 million in 2014, $21 million in 2015, $23 million in 2016, and $26 million in 2017.

It equates to a five-year payout of $101 million ? $1 million better than Brees and, for now, making Flacco the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL.

The two sides would have to decide whether and to what extent the money due beyond 2013 would be guaranteed, for injury only or fully.? Last year, Brees received $40 million in the first year, with $20 million guaranteed for injury only in future years.? (The injury guarantees eventually convert to full guarantees.)

The cap number in the final year would be a potential problem for the Ravens, since Flacco presumably would have one more long-term contract left before retirement.? Specifically, the $26 million cap number in 2017 would translate to a franchise tag of $31.2 million in 2018.? Thus, it would make more sense for the Ravens to tack on a sixth year at a base salary of, say, $21 million.

This would keep the average north of $20 million per year and it would give the Ravens a more manageable franchise number of $25.2 million for 2019.

Is it really that simple?? Yes, it is.? Which means that it likely won?t happen this way.

Even though it could be worked out in a matter of hours.? Or, if both sides are truly motivated, a matter of minutes.

Kurdish militant leader signals Turkish prisoners may be freed

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The jailed leader of Turkey's Kurdish rebellion on Saturday signaled that his followers could release captives and further a fledgling peace process that may be the best hope in years of ending the decades-long conflict.

The call by Abdullah Ocalan, the head of the autonomy-seeking Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), came after a rare meeting with members of parliament's only pro-Kurdish party at his prison on an island in the Sea of Marmara south of Istanbul.

It fell short of a new ceasefire declaration, which Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan would like to see to boost an initiative that includes state officials' negotiations with Ocalan and aims to end a war that has claimed 40,000 lives since 1984.

Reading a short statement by Ocalan, Pervin Buldan, a member of the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) who visited Ocalan with two other lawmakers, said upon their return that the rebel leader would like to see captives held by the PKK freed.

"A historic process is under way. All sides should be very careful and sensitive," Buldan cited Ocalan as saying.

"The state and the PKK both have prisoners. The PKK should treat prisoners well, and I hope they return to their families."

Ocalan may be referring to both captured soldiers and government employees kidnapped by the PKK in recent years.

Thousands of militants and their suspected supporters are in jail, many of them awaiting verdicts in trials that last years.

Turkey, the United States and the European Union list the PKK as a terrorist group.

REBELS' WITHDRAWAL SOUGHT

Earlier, Erdogan reiterated that the PKK must leave Turkey.

"We have repeatedly said weapons should be given up and members of this terrorist organization withdraw from the country," Erdogan said at a news conference that was aired live.

"As for the withdrawal, we have said we will take measures to avoid the kind of unfortunate developments that occurred in the past," Erdogan said, possibly referring to military attacks on the PKK when they have declared ceasefires in the past.

The PKK says it keeps about half of its 7,000 fighters in Turkey and half in northern Iraq, where it maintains its main camps in remote, nearly impassable mountains.

Turkey estimates the number of rebels to be lower.

Erdogan has said he wants to end one of Europe's deadliest insurgencies. A sharp rise in violence since June 2011 has killed more than 800 soldiers and PKK guerrillas. Fighting has tapered off since October, as it does most years due to the weather.

The conflict has stunted economic growth, wrecked Turkey's human rights record and made EU membership elusive.

The war in neighboring Syria, where Kurdish groups linked to the PKK were fighting opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, has given the peace process some urgency.

Buldan and the others' meeting with Ocalan was the second since January by the BDP, which Erdogan has called the "PKK's extension," and he also met his brother. Until recently, the 64-year-old rebel commander was kept in seclusion since June 2011.

Ocalan is serving a life sentence for treason. In jail since 1999, he still holds sway over the PKK and is considered a hero by nationalist Kurds. Ethnic Kurds make up about 20 percent of Turkey's population of 75 million people.

There are also large numbers of Kurds living in Iraq, Syria and Iran, and Kurds are frequently described as the world's largest ethnic group without its own state.

The PKK, which once sought an independent Kurdish homeland, has scaled back its demands to limited self-rule in Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast and greater cultural rights.

Research suggests malaria can be defeated without a globally led eradication program

Research suggests malaria can be defeated without a globally led eradication program

    Friday, February 22, 2013

Malaria does not have to be eradicated globally for individual countries to succeed at maintaining elimination of the disease, according to research from the University of Florida's Emerging Pathogens Institute and department of geography, to be published in the journal Science Feb. 22.

Researchers Andrew Tatem and Christina Chiyaka found that those countries that have eliminated malaria have maintained their malaria-free states with remarkable stability, going against traditional theory. Between 1945 and 2010, 79 countries eliminated malaria and 75, or 95 percent, remained malaria-free, shrinking the geographic range of the disease, the researchers said.

For the 99 countries with endemic malaria today, the research by Tatem and his colleagues has important implications for tackling the problem. The elimination of malaria may be less costly to achieve and maintain than previously thought, Tatem said.

"Traditional theory suggests that we have to get rid of malaria completely, all across the world, all at around the same time, to keep new cases from being imported and starting outbreaks in elimination countries all over again," said Tatem, who conducted the research at UF and now is a professor at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom. Chiyaka also has moved to the United Kingdom with her family.

The researchers found, however, that malaria elimination may be a 'sticky state,' meaning that once elimination is achieved, resurgence becomes a rare event.

"For instance, the United States imports 1,500 cases of malaria per year but has seen very few local outbreaks resulting from these, despite still having mosquitoes capable of spreading malaria," Tatem said. "The United States doesn't have active control measures in place, but does have a well-functioning detection system in place to take care of it."

Tatem said that many factors, working in combination, have likely contributed to the stability of malaria elimination seen in many countries. These include urbanization, which creates environments that are unfavorable for malaria-spreading mosquitoes; improvements in surveillance within health systems to ensure that imported cases are treated promptly and any local outbreaks are controlled early; and travel patterns, with travelers who bring in infections from elsewhere rarely ending up in rural areas where mosquito densities are highest, thus reducing the likelihood of onward spread.

Malaria has long been a global health issue. In 1955, the World Health Organization launched an eradication campaign that eliminated the disease in many temperate and subtropical regions but did not achieve worldwide eradication. The program was scrapped after less than two decades in favor of controlling malaria. However, WHO attributed about 660,000 deaths to the disease in 2010, mostly African children.

New Privately Built Rocket Passes Key Engine Test

A new commercial rocket designed to launch unmanned cargo missions to the International Space Station passed a key engine test Friday night (Feb. 22), setting the stage for the booster's debut flight in the months ahead, NASA officials say.

The Virginia-based company Orbital Sciences Corp. test-fired the first stage engines of its new Antares rocket at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport on Wallops Island, Va. ? the home of NASA's Wallops Flight Facility. The so-called "hot fire" test ignited the Antares rocket's engines for 29 seconds without ever leaving the launch pad.

Friday's engine test was aimed at verifying the fueling systems at the spaceport's launch Pad-0A and Antares rocket first stage would perform as expected during an actual mission, Orbital officials said.

"Initial review of the test data indicate the primary objectives of the test were accomplished," Orbital officials wrote in a status update. "The pad and fueling systems will undergo post-test inspections and any necessary reconditioning work will be performed."

Orbital Sciences is one of two private spaceflight companies with billion-dollar NASA contracts to provide unmanned cargo delivery missions to the International Space Station. Under its $1.9 billion Commercial Resupply Services contract, Orbital will make at least eight delivery flights to the space station using its Antares rocket and robotic Cygnus spacecraft. The first Antares rocket test flight is expected later this year. [Antares Rocket and Cygnus Explained (Infographic)]

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) is the other company with a NASA contract for unmanned space station deliveries. SpaceX has a $1.6 billion contract to fly at least 12 missions to the space station using its Dragon space capsules and Falcon 9 rocket. The company launched both a test flight and a bona fide delivery mission to the space station in 2012. The second delivery flight under the contract is?slated to launch on March 1.

"This pad test is an important reminder of how strong and diverse the commercial space industry is in our nation," Phil McAlister, director of Commercial Spaceflight Development at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said in a statement. "A little more than one year after the retirement of the space shuttle, we had a U.S company resupplying the International Space Station. Now, another is taking the next critical steps to launch from America's newest gateway to low-Earth orbit."

With the retirement of NASA's space shuttle fleet in 2011, the space agency is relying on new private rockets and spacecraft to ferry cargo ? and eventually astronauts ? to and from low-Earth orbit. NASA is currently dependent on Russia, Europe and Japan for?cargo deliveries to the space station. Russia's Soyuz spacecraft are the only vehicles currently available to ferry astronauts to and from the station. ?

Orbital's engine Friday test marked the company's second attempt to check the Antares rocket's dual AJ26 rocket engines, which are designed to provide 680,000 pounds of thrust. A first attempt on Feb. 13 was aborted before engine ignition due to a "low pressurization" detection during a nitrogen purge in the rocket's aft engine compartment, Orbital officials said in an update.

Orbital officials are now working toward test flights of the Antares rocket and its Cygnus spacecraft. The first demonstration flight falls under a separate contract for NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, and is expected to launch later this year.

This story was updated Saturday at 6 a.m. ET to include information on the success of Friday's Antares rocket engine test and comments from NASA and Orbital Sciences.

George Galloway storms out of Oxford University: 'I don't recognise Israel and I don't debate with Israelis'

    • George Galloway was debating Israel's settlements at university event
    • Left the room after he found out student who was speaking was Israeli
    • Faced Twitter backlash but wrote, 'I never debate with Israelis'

    By Sam Greenhill

    |

Controversial Left-wing MP George Galloway shocked an Oxford University audience by refusing to debate with an opponent because he was Israeli.

To cries of ?racism?, Mr Galloway picked up his coat and stormed out of the hall.

The Respect MP had been booked to appear in the debate at Christ Church college and had spoken for ten minutes in favour of the motion that ?Israel should withdraw immediately from the West Bank?.

    Scroll down for video

Walkout: George Galloway left a debate at Oxford after discovering one of the speakers was from Israel

Out of the door: The controversial MP stormed out and later said he had been misled about the debate

But when his opponent, Eylon Aslan-Levy, began putting the opposing view, Mr Galloway took umbrage at learning he was an Israeli.

    ?

Film of the incident shows Mr Aslan-Levy, 21, a third-year philosophy, politics and economics student at Brasenose College, using ?we? in reference to Israel.

Mr Galloway can be heard muttering: ?Did he say ?we??? before interrupting his opponent.

?You said ?we?,? said the Bradford West MP. ?Are you an Israeli?? ?I am, yes,? Mr Aslan-Levy replied.

?I don?t debate with Israelis. I have been misled. Sorry,? said Mr Galloway.

Anger: Mr Aslan-Levy says that the MP's 'hardline views' should bar him from sitting in Parliament

As he reached the door, he added: ?I don?t recognise Israel, and I don?t debate with Israelis,? before storming out of the room.

Some of those in the audience shouted abuse at the departing MP, including ?racism!? and ?I?m a human being?.

Afterwards, Mr Aslan-Levy said: ?I am appalled that an MP would storm out of a debate with me for no reason other than my heritage.

?To refuse to talk to someone just because of their nationality is pure racism, and totally unacceptable for a Member of Parliament.?

Stunned: The audience of students looked shocked by Mr Galloway's outburst

Mr Aslan-Levy grew up in Finchley, North London, and has Israeli citizenship because both his parents are Israeli.

Debate organiser Mahmood Naji told Oxford student newspaper Cherwell: ?At no point during my email exchange with Mr Galloway?s secretary was Eylon?s nationality ever brought up or mentioned.

?Nor do I expect to have to tell the speaker what his opponent?s nationality is.?

Mr Galloway later updated his Facebook page to say: ?I refused this evening at Oxford University to debate with an Israeli, a supporter of the apartheid state of Israel.

?The reason is simple: no recognition, no normalisation. Just boycott, divestment and sanctions, until the apartheid state is defeated.?

Mr Galloway, who famously met Saddam Hussein in 2007, was expelled from the Labour Party in 2003 for calling Tony Blair a liar.

Last year he won a by-election in Bradford West, taking the seat from Labour.

China has detained the 17-year-old son of a general on suspicion of involvement in a gang rape, reports said Friday, the latest allegation against the privileged children of officials to spark public outrage.

Li Tianyi, the son of general Li Shuangjiang ? a popular singer and household name in the country ? was held on Thursday, reported several Chinese news outlets including state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV).

Crimes by the offspring of China?s elite cause particular anger among ordinary people.

The latest reports did not go into detail about the alleged offence, but news of the teenager?s arrest was re-posted thousands of times on Sina Weibo, China?s version of Twitter, with many users leaving angry comments.

The Myth of the Movie Musical Renaissance

Fantine (ANNE HATHAWAY) is thrown out of the factory in "Les Misérables". Fantine, played by Anne Hathaway is thrown out of the factory in Les Mis?rables.

    Courtesy of Universal Pictures

By most accounts, the movie version of Les Miserabl?s has been a success. Reviews were mixed, but it has earned eight Academy Award nominations, plus $140 million in domestic box office?and almost twice that overseas. While the stage version was hugely popular, the film?s success was hardly guaranteed. The recent adaptation of Phantom of the Opera?also a huge Broadway hit?was a critical and commercial failure. (It made just more than $50 million domestically, which was less than its reported budget.) So the movie musical is totally coming back, right?

Of course not. But that won?t stop many, many people from saying so. ?The musical as a motion picture genre has had a remarkable renaissance in the last decade,? declared Craig Zadan and Neil Meron in a press release issued by the Academy last month. Zadan and Meron have helped put together ?a special celebration of musicals of the last 10 years? for this Sunday?s Oscar ceremony. The renaissance of the genre is so remarkable, apparently, that this celebration will showcase a grand total of three examples: Chicago, Dreamgirls, and Les Miserabl?s. That?s it. And for an obvious reason: There simply haven?t been that many good movie musicals made in the last 10 years.

And yet, whenever one comes out, the cry returns: The musical is back! And that cry is not just a decade old. When Evita was released in 1996, the Philadelphia Inquirer asked, ?Movie musicals: on the brink of a renaissance?? Besides the Madonna vehicle, The Preacher?s Wife with Whitney Houston and Woody Allen?s Everybody Says I Love You made this seem like a question worth asking. No notable movie musicals were released for the next five years.

But then Chicago arrived in 2002, with its sardonic humor and slick camerawork, and Billboard wondered, ?Can Chicago Spell a Comeback for the Movie Musical?? The film?s strong box office, Billboard said, boded ?well for the movie musical,? which had recovered from a long ?dry spell? thanks to the previous year?s beloved and bizarre Moulin Rouge. The Telegraph agreed, constructing a narrative that went back to that previous harbinger of the musical?s triumphant return, Evita.

It?s taken a three-step tango for us to welcome back the movie musical as a form. Alan Parker?s grandiose but failed Evita nudged the door ajar; Baz Luhrmann?s wildly uneven Moulin Rouge?flung it wide open; and now the satisfyingly straightforward, professionally polished Chicago steps triumphantly through. Make no mistake, Rob Marshall?s film is much the best of the three, and arguably the most enjoyable picture of its kind since Bob Fosse?s Cabaret in 1972.

As this Sunday?s ?special celebration? demonstrates, Chicago remains the main reference point for the decade that followed. Whenever a new musical?Rent, Mamma Mia!, The Producers, Hairspray?hits theaters, critics and movie lovers cite the Rob Marshall movie and ponder the impending return of the glorious movie musical?as they did, for instance, in the online debate, ?Can Rock of Ages Save Movie Musicals?? (The right answer again, in case you were wondering, is no.)

So what?s going on here? Why does every new movie musical prompt people to wonder if we are returning to some earlier, golden age? The simple answer is that movie musicals inspire nostalgia. But that raises a more complicated question. Why?

It?s worth noting that only a specific kind of movie musical inspires this response. No one asked if Pitch Perfect or Once, for example, would save the movie musical. Some might argue that these are not ?true? musicals, because characters don?t simply break into song; instead, the songs are presented as performances within the movie. But that?s the case with some of the genre?s classics as well, such as 42nd Street and Stormy Weather. Feature-length cartoons don?t prompt movie-musical-renaissance thinkpieces, either?though, for what it?s worth, those have been on the decline lately, too. When people talk about a comeback for movie musicals, they?re most often thinking of big, live-action movies in which characters break spontaneously into song and which lots of people go to see. Think Singin? in the Rain. Think about that one for a minute, actually. Widely regarded as the best movie musical of all time, Singin? in the Rain (1952) is set 25 years prior to its release and depicts the dawn of the ?talkie.? The movie itself looks back fondly on the beginning of the genre?s golden age.

Of the recent musicals that take ?classic? form, a huge number are set in the past. Les Mis?rables takes place in 19th-century France. Chicago is set in the 1920s. Hairspray and Nine revel in the early ?60s. Dreamgirls is divided between that era and the early ?70s. Even Rock of Ages indulges shamelessly in 1980s nostalgia. Since the great era of movie musicals ended, the genre has not only frequently depicted the past, it has been, on some level, about the past.

The movie-musical golden age lasted, roughly speaking, from the 1930s to the early 1960s, when the studio system collapsed. Back then, musicals were frequently among the top grossing films of the year. ?Everybody? saw them. Our entertainment options were far more limited, of course, and tickets to the movies were cheaper. Movie musicals?which generally feature big choruses and group singing and dance numbers in which everyone on-screen joins in?celebrate the coming together of large numbers of people. In other words, they re-enact what movies themselves once did, and what, whenever we see them, we hope they might do again.

But times have changed, irrevocably. Despite a slight uptick in their production lately, musicals today are incredibly difficult to get off the ground. (You may be waiting forever for that Wicked adaptation.) It?s going to stay that way.

There is something inherently fanciful about the musical genre. No matter how ?raw? or ?gritty? a movie like Les Miserabl?s may attempt to be, the act of singing?and in other cases, dancing?to express one?s self in the middle of an otherwise ordinary world will never feel entirely ?realistic.? Like the movies generally, but only more so, musicals conjure a fantasy world, full of melody and?even more crucially?harmony. Musicals are, in that way, grander than life. And they are worth celebrating. But the golden age is never coming back.

Payday loans hurt at-risk customers, study finds

    By Herb Weisbuam, TODAY contributor

A new report from the Pew Charitable Trusts calls into question the main marketing claims used to sell payday loans to 19 million Americans each year.

Payday loans are billed as a quick and easy solution to an unexpected financial emergency ? an affordable, short-term loan that will help the borrower get to the next pay day. But they're not.

Most customers (58 percent) routinely have trouble meeting their monthly expenses. For them, the loan is a way to cope with a persistent lack of money. In fact, Pew found that seven out of 10 borrowers use these loans to pay regular living expenses, such as rent, utilities and credit card bills.

The ultimate cost and duration of these loans are ?highly unpredictable and bear little resemblance to their two-week packaging,? Pew found. Only 14 percent of those who take out a payday or bank deposit advance loan can repay it in full.

?Our research shows payday loans are unaffordable,? said Nick Bourke, director of Pew's small-dollar loans research project. ?The average borrower simply cannot afford to pay back an average payday loan which requires $430 on the next pay day.?

The Community Financial Services Association of America (CFSA), which represents payday lenders, called the Pew report incomplete and inaccurate.

?Pew unfairly paints the entire industry with a broad brush,? CFSA said in a statement. ?In our current economy and constricted credit market, it is critical that consumers have the credit options they need to deal with their financial challenges.?

    Why turn to payday loans?

For someone struggling to make ends meet, payday loans are mighty appealing. They?re easy to get. They?re confidential, so family members don?t need to know about them. Customers believe the advertising that describes them as a short-term fix for a temporary cash-flow problem.

Related: Are you earning minimum wage? We want to hear from you.

?That appeals to people because they don?t want more debt,? Bourke explained. ?They don?t want another bill on the pile. They want an in-and-out solution, but for most payday loan borrowers it doesn?t work out that way. The reality is that the average payday loan borrower is in debt for 5 months of the year and pays $520 in finance charges.?

CFSA said its members provide an Extended Payment Plan, at no additional charge, if customers cannot repay their loan when due. Pew suggests the vast majority of borrowers don?t take advantage of this program where offered.

    Why is this happening?
Simply put, customers have ?unrealistic expectations? about the total cost of that loan. Pew found that they know the price they?ll pay upfront ? typically $55 for a $375 loan ? but they fail to consider the negative impact that loan will have on their budget in two weeks when it comes due. How are they going to come up with the cash ? $400 or more ? needed to pay off the loan in full?

?The loans are really difficult or impossible to repay unless the borrower gets some kind of a windfall or a bailout,? Bourke said.

The report quotes a former borrower from Manchester, New Hampshire who sums it up this way:

?Well, Friday came, you gave them your pay, what you owed them, which cleared off that loan, but now you have nothing, so you have to re-borrow to survive the week or two weeks.?

Payday loans are often marketed as a way to prevent checking account overdraft fees. Pew found they do not eliminate that risk. In fact, for about a quarter of the borrowers (27 percent) an overdraft occurred when the lender made a withdrawal from their account.

What?s it like to be a payday loan customer?
Borrowers expressed mixed feelings about payday lenders. They like getting on-the-spot credit, but they?re frustrated by how difficult it is to repay the loan.

A majority said they appreciate the service payday lenders provide ? quick cash and friendly service. In fact, some said it?s too easy to get the money. A majority also said they felt taken advantage of by the high cost of the loan. ?

One person told Pew researchers it was a ?sweet and sour? experience. It?s sweet when you get the money and sour when you have to pay it back.

Maybe that?s why borrowers overwhelmingly want to see changes in the way payday loans work and more government regulation.

    A call for action
Millions of people use small-term loans when they?re short on cash. But as consumer advocates have long insisted and Pew researchers have now documented, all too often that quick loan doesn?t solve the problem and may make it worse.?

?Policymakers need to pay attention to this research,? Bourke said, ?because it really shows payday loans are not working as advertised.?

Payday lenders insist they provide ?an important financial tool? for people who need money to pay for an unexpected expense or manage a shortfall between paychecks.

Timing is the key to high margin work in Management Consulting

Professional services firms need more than capability to establish new client relationships, argues Iain MacLeod, Professional Services Director, INCo

For a good while now, the sustained downward pressure on consulting fee rates has been well documented. A trend seems to be developing within a large number of FTSE organisations to prioritise cost over the suitability of the consulting firm to deliver engagements, and as a result the entire provision of consulting services is becoming increasingly commoditised.

Being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference to consulting sales success

Being in the right place at the right time can make all the difference to consulting sales success

Over the past few months INCo has been working with a number of consulting clients to devise effective strategies to overcome this particular challenge. Most clients seemed to feel that factors such as success-based fee modelling and the ability to differentiate ? in terms of both their organisation and services ? from their peer group would have been most important in gaining their highest margin engagements. While this certainly proved true in some instances, the issue of timing has proven to be a third critical factor, and one of much greater import than had been thought.

INCo conducted an exercise with several key clients. A selection of their highest margin deals from the past three years were analysed in some detail, and while elements of the results were unique to each firm and each project, the most common element in all of these deals was the timing of the initial engagement with the prospect. In almost every instance, the firm had been able to engage the prospect early enough in the sales cycle to be able to help guide them in the creation of a solution.? As a result, there was evidence of much greater trust from the client side when it came to scoping the eventual engagement.

INCo experience has shown that timing the initial engagement with a potential buyer is hugely important.

Engage too late in the cycle and you are likely to find that you are part of a multi-firm beauty parade where price is often the most important differentiator. Equally, if you invest too much resource in maintaining contact and relationships with prospects until they are in the perfect position, the overall cost of sale becomes too large to sustain. Even an engagement that looks like it is delivering suitable margins is actually less profitable than it might have been.

Using a specialist firm like INCo is an important option in building a sales pipeline.? INCo can be used to establish contact, build brand and capability awareness and then nurture C-Suite relationships until the timing is right for partner engagement. In this way, consulting firms can take maximum advantage of client timing whilst simultaneously freeing up high-fee earner resource for other activity.

Ayew: Beckham a fashion not football icon

Marseille forward Andre Ayew says he has always admired David Beckham, but it will be fashion tips and not footballing advice the Ghanaian will be seeking come Sunday's encounter with Paris Saint-Germain.

Ayew, 23, will likely come up against Beckham, 37, when PSG's January signing makes his debut for his new club at the Parc des Princes in France's clasico. Many of his team-mates will no doubt have their eyes on swapping shirts with Beckham at the final whistle, but Ayew is more interested in what the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star will be wearing before and after the game than during it.

"He's a great player," Ayew, the son of OM legend Abedi Pele, said. "When I was little, I watched him on TV, I saw him do some great things and win trophies, but he's not my idol. It was never my dream to play against him. It's good to have that opportunity, but it's not something I had in the back of my mind.

"I like fashion, and it's more in that field that I admire him than for his football, even if he has scored some beautiful goals and provided some wonderful assists."

While Beckham's place in the PSG starting XI remains in doubt, Ayew is a certainty to start for the visitors, who have yet to beat Carlo Ancelotti's men in two previous encounters this season, drawing at the Stade Velodrome in the first league meeting of the season in October before losing in the Coupe de Ligue in the capital later the same month.

With six points between the pair going into the game, third-placed OM can ill afford to lose if they are to retain any hope of pipping their arch-rivals and current league leaders to the Ligue 1 title. After seeing PSG slip up at Sochaux last weekend, though, Ayew believes Elie Baup's side can go into the game with hope.

"We know PSG are favourites, that's logical, but we will have some say in the matter," said Ayew, who will stay with his team-mates on the outskirts of Paris after Sunday's game with OM facing PSG again in the Coupe de France next Wednesday. "We saw against Sochaux and against Rennes that they're beatable. They're not impossible to beat. If we play well, and get the rub of the green, anything is possible."
