Heavy snowstorm hits Colorado on its way east (AP)

DENVER ? A powerful winter storm swept across Colorado on Friday as it headed east, bringing blizzard warnings to eastern Colorado and western Kansas, and winter storm warnings for southeast Wyoming and western Nebraska.

The Colorado Department of Transportation closed portions of Interstate 70 and Interstate 25, the two main arteries crisscrossing the state. The National Weather Service said snow was falling at 2 inches an hour on the Eastern Plains, producing some blizzard conditions.

Colorado State Patrol spokesman Josh Lewis said non-essential staffers were told to come in at 10 a.m. and Gov. John Hickenlooper told state workers in the Denver metro area to stay home until 10 a.m. unless their jobs involved health and safety.

Transportation spokeswoman Becky Navarro said Friday eastbound I-70 was closed from Aurora to Limon and a ramp was closed on Interstate 25 in Denver because of numerous accidents.

"There are a lot of areas on the Front Range where there is very poor visibility," she said.

One of the largest snow totals Friday morning was 18 inches in Pinecliff west of Denver, and snow totals were mounting rapidly along the Front Range and eastern Colorado.

Jim Kalina of the National Weather Service said another foot of snow was expected in some areas along the Front Range before the storm moves out on Saturday.

The weather service said the snow will be moderate at times on Friday in Wyoming and Nebraska. However, winds could gust up to 35 mph and produce blowing snow from the southern Laramie Range to Sidney, Neb.

Cities in the Front Range urban corridor from Colorado Springs in the south to Fort Collins and Greeley in the north were under a winter storm warning.

The storm warnings prompted shoppers to stock up on food and liquor, while Colorado lawmakers canceled legislative work on Friday.

Stores in Denver reported brisk business Thursday night.

"The cheese wall is hammered, bread's kind of hammered, milk's kind of low," said Aaron McFadden, a manager at a King Soopers store.

Ted Vaca at Argonaut Liquor said customers were snapping up all kinds of drink.

"It was more like a Friday than a Thursday," he said.

The storm forced the cancellation of more than 200 arriving and departing flights at the Denver airport that had been scheduled through Friday night.

A Learjet ran off a runway at the Pueblo airport as the storm moved in, but investigators hadn't determined if the weather was a factor. None of the 10 people aboard was injured, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Many school districts announced they would be closed on Friday, including the two largest, in Jefferson County and Denver.

The storm could break into the top 10 list of the heaviest snowstorms in Denver history. The city's 10th biggest dumped 22.1 inches in 1912, NWS meteorologist Chad Gimmestad said.

Denver's record is 45.7 inches from a five-day wallop in 1913.

'Blue Bloods' Sneak Peek: Danny And Erin Get Serious In 'The Job' (VIDEO)

Being the Danny Reagan's (Donnie Wahlberg) wife on CBS' cop drama "Blue Bloods" isn't easy, but on Friday night's all-new episode, Danny's actions will put Linda (Amy Carlson) and the kids in serious danger.

As a result, Linda has had enough.

In the episode, titled "The Job," Linda and Danny aren't on the best of terms after Danny opens fire on a gunman right in front of Linda and the kids. The event leaves Danny, Linda -- and their two boys -- shaken, so it's up to Erin (Bridget Moynahan) to try and knock some sense into Danny.

"Blue Bloods" airs Fridays at 10 p.m. EST on CBS.

an army of ermas: Why Did People Stop Dying?

by Steve Barber

I don't remember exactly when I first became aware of it, but I have known for some time that people almost never die anymore. Don't believe me? Read the obituaries. You'll see. People pass away, pass on, or they're called Home to be with the Lord. But almost nobody dies. I'm not sure why this is, but I'm convinced that some people have gone to great lengths to make the language of death and dying confusing as all get out. Those people are called Obituary Writers.

People who write obits are the reason angels come to take some folks to Heaven while others apparently have to find their own way. But what if you're an atheist and don't believe in Heaven? What happens to you then? Who is there to guide you on your final journey, and where are you supposed to go anyhow? I'll bet the obit writers never thought of that one.

That's not all they haven't thought of. Here's more:

1.????? When someone dies from a nasty disease, why does he have to have a courageous battle first? Aren't there any dead cancer sufferers who gave up the minute they got their diagnosis?

2.????? Why, when people die, must they be either surrounded by their loving family or have their loving family by their side?? I'll tell you this, if I were concerned about my health and felt my life slipping away, the last thing I'd do is let my family near my sickbed. There's a causal relationship between circling relatives and death. I'm sure of it.

3.????? Why can't I be sad when a friend or relative passes away? Why must I be bereaved instead? And did you know that when I go to the visitation, viewing or wake I won't see Uncle Rollo there, but I'll see Uncle Rollo's remains. His remains will, of course, be reposing in a slumber room. Why must dead people repose? Can't they simply lie there? And, you know, he's not exactly sleeping, so why do they put him in a slumber room?

4.????? When dead people repose, they must do so in a coffin or casket. Coffins and caskets are overpriced boxes that have handles on the side, the top door open, the bottom door closed and contain a satin pillow on which to rest Uncle Rollo's remains' head, not that he notices. Why do they call them coffins when what they are are boxes?

5.????? Uncle Rollo has had his jaw wired shut, little caps shoved up under his eyelids to keep his eyes closed, and his bodily fluids drained and replaced by noxious chemicals. The funeral home staff set his carcass under special soft lights and they've smeared makeup all over his visible body parts. Then people file past the casket and say, "My, my. Doesn't Uncle Rollo look natural?" Why do they do this and whom do they think they are kidding?

You want natural? I'll tell you what's natural. Cremation, that's what. Ashes to ashes and all that. And that's what I'm opting for when I finally cash in my chips, buy the farm, or exceed my 'sell by date.' But I promise you this. The first person that calls my ashes ?creamains? is in for one heck of a haunting.

Obama helps woman with husband's resume (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama may help Jennifer Wedel's husband find a job. Whether he gets her vote is another question.

Two days after Obama talked with Wedel during an online town hall and offered to take a look at her unemployed husband's resume, Wedel said the president has followed through.

Wedel told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday that she got a call from a White House deputy chief of staff, Alyssa Mastromonaco, who told her Obama had made a personal point of making sure the matter was taken care of. Mastromonaco said the resume was sent to contacts in the Dallas-Fort Worth area where the couple lives.

Now Wedel's husband Darin has been contacted by several recruiters, and Wedel said she's grateful.

But Wedel, a Republican, said that may not be enough to get her vote unless Obama also improves some of his job policies.

"Just because he's able to send a resume out, that's not going to be a vote factor," Wedel said.

"We're just one American," she said. "There are thousands of Americans just like my husband with no job."

Wedel wants Obama to look at limiting the number of visas going to high-tech workers from foreign countries, the issue she raised with him Monday evening in the forum hosted by Google Plus. Wedel was able to question Obama in a live video chat room known as a Hangout.

Obama expressed surprise during their exchange that Darin Wedel was out of work, saying that the word he was getting from industry was that fields like semiconductor engineering were in demand and Darin Wedel should be able to get a job. Obama also said he found the situation "interesting," a comment Republicans have subsequently used to attack the president by suggesting he's out of touch with the concerns of the unemployed.

Jennifer Wedel said Wednesday that she felt like she was "hushed up a little bit" by Obama when they spoke, but that she also found him candid and appreciated his accessibility. "I don't think any other president has shown that outreach," Wedel said.

Home Inspector | How to find a trusted home inspector | Garden and ...

The home inspection industry, like much of the service industry, is actually referral-based. There are lots of good home inspectors available, therefore it needs to be simple to find one to do the job. There are many home inspectors available, so how does an individual proceed with selecting just one? Referrals, organizations and information straight from the home inspector may be used to have the right choice.

Below is an elaboration of how methods all of those elements may be used to choose which inspector is the best suited for any particular client.
The home inspection industry, like much of the service industry, is actually referral-based. Family and friends are a good source of referrals, because the accounts of their experiences with inspectors could be trusted.

Real estate agents are another good source, since they will often have had considerable dealings having a number of home inspectors. Many people worry that the realtor may send them to an inattentive home inspector to assure that a sale experiences.

Nevertheless, most realtors ultimately want the customer to become fully aware of the condition of the house during the time of the sale, since misleading a customer will end up costing the real estate agent their own referrals later on. If you?re worried that your realtor may mislead you concerning what home examiner to pick, then you should probably take a look at using several agents.

One other good option to distinguish between home inspectors is the home inspection associations to which they suit. Several inspectors use their subscriptions being a marketing strategy, simply because they realize that customers respect the high standards such groups demand of their members.

The final option to select a home inspector would be to take the questions you have straight to the house inspectors themselves. Initially, check out their sites or catalogues for information. And then, discuss any remaining queries or issues with the inspector personally or over the phone. Search for just how much experience the inspector has and check on any qualifications.

Not every state demands licenses; therefore it might be up to the customer to make certain that the inspector is certified. Check out what services are provided and what includes an average home inspection. Learn how many inspections the inspector usually executes and just how much time is going to be dedicated.

Ask how much an inspection will definitely cost for the home?s size, ensuring to incorporate the charges associated with additional services needed. Remember that the least expensive choice is not necessarily the very best. Ultimately, observe how the inspector brings about and offers their house inspection reviews.

Many inspectors will provide a hand-written report during the time of the inspection, while some can create a computer generated statement with home inspection software. Using the computerized report it might be emailed later on that day, or even printed out on website.

You will need to visit a sample from the report they?ve created to obtain an awareness of methods the condition of the house is likely to be given to you. After getting all this information from referrals, organizations and home inspectors on their own, an informed decision is available regarding which inspector would be the best option.

Thankfully, there are lots of good home inspectors available, therefore it needs to be simple to find one to do the job.Inspectit1st.com helps to carry out a home inspection, offering home inspector who determines if the home?s components are executing their supposed function, and when replacement or repair needs to be expected.

Detailed picture of how myoV 'walks' along actin tracks

Tuesday, January 31, 2012

A new study in the Journal of General Physiology uses state-of-the-art fluorescence microscopy to provide a striking 3-D picture of how class V myosins (myoV) "walk" along their actin track.

The myosin superfamily of mechanoenzymes, more commonly referred to as molecular motors, play an important role in muscle contraction and other basic cellular processes. MyoV, one of the most highly studied molecular motors, has the ability to travel long distances by taking multiple hand-over-hand steps without falling off their actin tracks. This makes the motor extremely well suited for intracellular cargo transport along the actin cytoskeleton. However, the complexity of the intracellular actin highway presents a physical challenge to transport, and it is therefore important to understand the structural components of myoV that allow it to maneuver so adeptly through the actin meshwork.

Using single-molecule fluorescence microscopy, Yale Goldman and colleagues, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, now provide highly refined real-time imagery of myoV molecules walking step by step along single actin filaments adhered to a glass microscope slide. Among the novel advances are characterization of the normal stepping across 13 actin monomers and the not-infrequent "misstepping" across 11 monomers that causes the myoV to rotate along the filaments.

"Clearly, Mother Nature has designed an efficient system for cargo delivery by tuning the myoV structure to match the track upon which it travels," says David Warshaw, from the University of Vermont, in a commentary accompanying the article. Goldman and his team provide insights that help to "fully appreciate the full repertoire of myoV's transport capacity," Warshaw adds.
