PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? Canada's minister of international cooperation says her government will help Haiti move people who have been camped outside the National Palace since the 2010 earthquake.
Beverley Oda said Canada was proud to be able to help clear the Champ de Mars plaza and move people to homes north of the capital. Nearly 20,000 people live in the camp across the street from the collapsed National Palace. Oda did not disclose the cost.
President Michel Martelly says people will begin moving in six weeks and the project will be finished next year.
Hundreds of people from the camp cheered Wednesday's announcement. Officials say more than 500,000 people still live in temporary settlement camps around Port-au-Prince.
