Coke and Pepsi race to create next-generation soda

Mark Lennihan / AP

Pepsi's line of ten-calorie sodas isn't quite yet in the sweet spot it and rival Coke want to hit.

By CANDICE CHOI, Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Coke and Pepsi are chasing after the sweet spot: a soda with no calories, no artificial sweeteners and no funny aftertaste.

The world's top soft drink companies hope that's the elusive trifecta that will silence health concerns about soda and reverse the decline in consumption of carbonated drinks. But such a formula could be years away.

That's because the ingredient that makes soda taste good is also what packs on the pounds: high-fructose corn syrup. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame that are used in diet drinks don't have any calories but are seen as processed and fake. Natural sweeteners that come from plants present the most promising alternative, but companies haven't yet figured out how to mask their metallic aftertaste.

Despite the complexities, soft drink makers push on in their search.

"I can't say when it will be here, but it's in the reasonable future," said Al Carey, who heads the beverage unit for the Americas at PepsiCo Inc., the world's No. 2 soda maker.

There's good reason that soft drink makers are so eager to tweak their formulas. Once a beloved American treat, sodas are now being blamed for the nation's bulging waistlines ? two-thirds of the country's adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That, coupled with the growing variety of flavored waters and sports drinks, has sent per capita soda consumption down 17 percent to about 1.3 cans a day since its peak in 1998, according to Beverage Digest, an industry tracker.

In New York City, a ban on the sale of sugary drinks bigger than 16 ounces in restaurants, theaters and stadiums could take effect as early as March. The mayor of Cambridge, Mass., proposed a similar ban last month. And in Richmond, Calif., voters will decide in November whether to pass the nation's first penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks such as fruit juices and teas.

All the negative publicity has some once-faithful soda drinkers cutting back. Krista Koster, a 29-year-old who lives in Washington D.C., used to down about two cans of soda a day. Now she's trying to kick the habit and be more conscious about what she drinks.

"I've just been hearing how bad soda is," said Koster, who works in public relations. "You start considering a lot of the ingredients, whether it's fake sugar or the real sugar."

High-fructose corn syrup, the cheap sweetener that's used in most sodas, has the same nutritional value and taste of sugar. A can of regular soda typically has about 40 grams of high-fructose corn syrup and 140 calories. By comparison, the same amount of apple juice has about 38 grams of sugar and 165 calories, but companies can tout the vitamins and other nutrients juice provides.

Aspartame, the artificial sweetener commonly used in drinks such as Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, doesn't have any calories. But some drinkers worry about the fact that the sweeteners are not naturally occurring in nature. Public perception has been colored by past studies that have suggested it caused cancer and brain tumors in rats even though The American Cancer Society says there's no evidence showing it has any link with an increased risk for cancer in adults.

The concerns have led soft drink companies to search for natural, zero-calorie sweeteners, including stevia, which is derived from a South American shrub. Natural sweeteners have neither the calories of sugar nor the negative associations of artificial sweeteners. The trick, however, is figuring out how to make them taste good in colas.

"Every sweetener has its own notes that need to be mixed with other flavors," said Mehmood Khan, chief science officer for PepsiCo. "It's a bit like an orchestra playing music, as opposed to one instrument."

So far, stevia is the natural sweetener that has gotten the most attention and is already used in Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products, including orange juice and bottled teas. But it's proving more difficult to hide the aftertaste in colas.

Soft drink makers are testing different extracts from the stevia plant that they hope will be easier to blend. They're also scouring the world for other naturally occurring sweeteners, such as one called mogroside that is extracted from monk fruit and a derivative of a berry called miracle fruit.

Coca-Cola, based in Atlanta, says it's currently testing additional drinks that use stevia and other natural sweeteners but declined to give details. The tests are part of the ongoing "home-use tests" the company conducts, in which consumers may be given a six-pack of a new product to try over the course of a week.

To accelerate the pace of such trials, Coca-Cola two years ago dedicated a production line at one of its plants solely to churning out test beverages. But taste isn't the only consideration for the world's biggest soda maker.

"Some of the very exciting (sweeteners) we're playing with are really small in terms of production and planting, and they need to be nurtured," says Katie Bayne, president of Coca-Cola's North American soda business.

Coca-Cola also is testing versions of its Sprite and Fanta that use stevia in Atlanta, Detroit, Louisville, Ky. and Memphis, Tenn. The drinks have about half the calories of regular Sprite and Fanta (70 per can, instead of 140 or 160, respectively). But the "Select" drinks fall short of the ideal because they have sugar.

PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., is also on the hunt for new drinks that use natural, no-calorie sweeteners. In 2010, the company entered a $62 million, four-year deal with food flavor company Senomyx Inc. to develop natural sweeteners and "taste enhancers" that can intensify sweetness. Coca-Cola also previously had an eight-year contract with Senomyx; neither of the partnerships has yet produced any products for commercial use.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group, the nation's third-largest soda maker, also is searching for the right combination. The company's line of flavored sodas, such as Sunkist and A&W Root Beer, may make it easier to mask the taste of natural sweeteners like stevia than with colas.

At a beverage industry conference earlier this year, Dr Pepper's Chief Financial Officer Marty Ellen said he thinks a "sweetener breakthrough" is achievable in the next few years.

Recreating the exact taste of extremely valuable brands such as Coke and Pepsi is a high-stakes game and companies don't want to rush any drinks to the market. But making a natural cola that doesn't have any calories isn't impossible. Smaller companies such as Zevia, based in Culver City, Calif., already make such colas using stevia.

Zevia is now sold in 10,500 locations ? including Kroger and Whole Foods ? up from just 850 locations four years ago. CEO Paddy Spence doesn't think Coke and Pepsi's efforts to come up with their own zero-calorie drinks will threaten his company.

"When consumers see a brand all of a sudden with different positioning, they see right through that," Spence said. "They'll say 'you're a sugar soda company that has a couple different stevia products.'"

Still, considering their enormous resources, it's likely that soda companies will eventually find a way to make natural drinks with no calories that taste good, says Mike Jacobson of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

"If you look 10 years ahead, we're going to see a different marketplace for sodas," he said.

New genetic test predicts prostate cancer risk | Rancho Santa Fe

By Lynne Friedmann

A genetic test to predict the risk for prostate cancer could reduce the need for repeat biopsies in men who have previously had negative biopsies.

In a clinical trial, 1,654 men who had prostate biopsies also had genetic studies conducted that looked for the presence of genetic variations that may have an association with prostate cancer risk.

The genetic test outperformed the widely used PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) test in assessing cancer risk. Because this ?genetic score? is available at any time in a man?s lifetime it could be used as a pre-screening test thus leaving aggressive PSA screening only to men at higher genetic risk.

The goal is to avoid, particularly in older men, unnecessary repeat biopsy procedures which carry with them the risk of infection and potential hospitalizations.

Inhibiting malaria parasite development

Malaria is responsible worldwide for more than 1.2 million human deaths annually. Severe forms of the disease are caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum transmitted to humans by the bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes. Lack of vaccines, together with the parasite?s ability to develop drug resistance, has thwarted eradication efforts.

An international team of scientists, led by researchers from the Department of Pediatrics at the UC School of Medicine, has identified the first reported inhibitors of a key enzyme essential for the development and survival of P. falciparum ? even in parasites that developed resistance to currently available drugs.

People with a natural deficiency in this enzyme are protected from malaria and its deadly symptoms, an observation that triggered the research effort. The hope is the discovery could provide the basis for future anti-malarial drug design.

Fighting E. coli infection

Despite ongoing public health efforts, E. coli bacteria outbreaks continue to infiltrate the food supply, annually causing significant sickness and death throughout the world.

Researchers from the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology have discovered a molecule?s previously unknown role in fighting off E. coli and other bacterial infections.

The molecule (known as HVEM), expressed by the cells lining the surface of the lung and intestine, is critical to protecting the body from E. coli, pneumococcus, and other bacterial infections that enter our bodies through our respiratory or intestinal tract linings.? But what wasn?t known was that HVEM, together win another receptor, is critically important in turning on an anti-bacterial response in the epithelial cells that line the body?s mucosal borders of the mouth, nose, intestines, and lungs. Without the two receptors acting in concert to provide this added protection, the body could not withstand these bacterial infections.

In Kenya, cell phones can do everything

Felipe Leon / NBC News

Margaret Wambui speaks on her cell phone outside her "M-Pesa" mobile banking shop in Nairobi, Kenya.

By Mary Murray, NBC News

NAIROBI, Kenya ? Imagine paying just $20 for a fancy cell phone with a good calling plan. Or how about working with a cell phone company that won?t obligate you to sign one of those tricky multiyear contracts with deceptive pricing plans detailed in tiny print that skyrocket with every added feature? How about calls to anywhere in the country costing less than 3 cents a minute and most international calls costing just a penny more?

Sound too good to be true, especially for American cell phone users? Not in Kenya. I?m on assignment in Kenya and am astonished at how little people pay for cell phone calls.

The phones work, calls are cheap, and the country is using cell phone technology innovative ways ? beyond simple telephone calls to personal banking. ?

In addition to having us beat, cell phone tariffs here are the lowest in Africa.

Competition frees up market
A call over Kenya?s Safaricom network, for example, costs about one-third the price of making a call from anywhere else on the continent.?

And those low prices apply to downloading data as well. No one blinks an eye at surfing the web for hours at a time on their phones.?

But Kenya wasn?t always so consumer-friendly.

A Canadian businessman told me that just six years ago, he was paying more than $1,000 a month to connect to the Internet via modem in Kenya. ?

And a photographer told me about how he used to trudge across Nairobi to a five-star hotel to connect a few times a week. ?Those days, there was just a handful of cyber cafes and they charged somewhere near the equivalent of $5 an hour, pretty pricey for the average user,? he said.?

During those years, hairdresser Janet Muoki said she only carried her cell phone for emergencies. Now she said she calls her brother living in the U.S. and her best friend in South Africa a few times a week.?

While cell phone prices have been steadily dropping in Kenya since 2008, last August the government regulator introduced new rules that sparked a fierce price war between carriers. It all started when the Communications Commission of Kenya cut mobile phone termination rates, namely how much mobile operators can charge for connecting your call to another network. ?

That fee was often blamed for bloating phone bills. Small companies trying to break into the cell phone business characterized the fee as a big-bully tactic of the larger cell phone networks?arguing that the higher the termination fee, the more expensive it becomes to operate their less popular networks.?

Felipe Leon / NBC News

Margaret Wambui works with a customer at her "M-Pesa" mobile banking store in Nairobi, Kenya.

But on July 1 Kenya?s termination rate was slashed again and now you don?t hear consumers complaining. Robert Kabata admitted that he loves seeing the cell phone companies fighting for his business. In the past, making a call was a big deal that required some thought; now he doesn?t think twice before making a call.?

To prove his point, Kabata said just that morning he went out to meet a friend. Before he reached their agreed rendezvous point, he sat down on a bench and called his buddy to tell him to walk around the corner.

?I know, it?s decadent,? he admitted with a grin.?

Cell phone banking
His wife, Margaret Wambui, makes her living from another modern feature of the Kenyan cell phone ? a mobile banking platform called ?M-Pesa.?? A joint venture between Safaricom and Vodaphone, the ?M? stands for mobile and ?Pesa? means money in Swahili. Many Kenyans say the mobile-phone-based money service has helped turn their mobile devices into mobile banks.?

With the ease of a text message, ?M-Pesa? allows millions of Kenyans to buy groceries, pay their rent and utility bills or transfer money without the need to maintain a bank account, visit the bank or even carry cash.

All consumers need to do is register with a national ID card or passport and then they can go to any licensed ?M-Pesa? customer booth, like Margaret?s booth next to her women?s clothing boutique, deposit the contents of their paychecks into accounts run from their cell phones or withdraw cash.

These days, Margaret says she earns up to five times more from ?M-Pesa? commissions than she does selling women?s clothing and jewelry.

Kenyans also use ?M-Pesa? to send money to relatives hundreds of miles away, living in the remotest corners of the country.

All the other person needs is an ?M-Pesa? feature on their cell phone too.? They then take their phone to an authorized agent, like Margaret, and with a push of a button they pick up their cash.

For giant telecom Vodaphone, which owns the ?M-Pesa? property rights, the innovation earned $15.6 million last year for the giant British telecom.

Nationwide, some $11 billion moved over the mobile network in 2011.

?M-Pesa? has transformed the way average Kenyans conduct business. It has been especially innovative for the 90 percent of the population who previously never had a bank account.?

Now, about 60 percent of Kenyans rely on ?M-Pesa? to shop, pay all their bills and generally move their money around.

No need to lug around credit cards or wads of cash. Who needs to waste time on a long bank line or at an ATM machine? Just a simple cell phone and a PIN number gets you through the day.

Who would argue that Kenyans haven?t re-invented the idea of a ?smart? phone?

Reconnecting with Musical Memories | Ageless Design

(Source: Alzheimer?s Assn.) ? No matter what our age, it?s a safe assumption that music plays a significant role in our lives. From the earliest nursery rhymes we learned as toddlers through the rebellious teenage years and on to romantic and family relationships over the decades, hearing a familiar melody can instantly bring us back to another time and place.

Long-term care facilities are well aware of the benefits of music, but not everyone?s experience is always positive. Persons with Alzheimer?s may lose the capacity to understand or distinguish various sounds in their environment, leading to more confusion or agitation; and they may have difficulty with appreciating music in a group setting. Additionally, they may not like or be familiar with the styles of music played in the facility.

Research on the brains of people with dementia, however, has shown that, even when someone is no longer able to communicate verbally, he or she will still respond to favorite music, often dramatically.

B.C. seeks more oil pipeline safeguards, share of benefits

The B.C. government is demanding extensive pipeline and coastal tanker safeguards as well as a bigger share of cash benefits for the province and First Nations as preconditions for considering any new oil pipeline.

The announcement applies not just to Enbridge's Northern Gateway pipeline proposal across northern B.C. to Kitimat but also to the proposed twinning of Kinder Morgan's existing Trans Mountain pipeline that diagonals southwest through B.C. and runs through the Lower Mainland to a Burnaby terminal.

"This isn't tacit approval of the project," Environment Minister Terry Lake said Monday, referring to Northern Gateway, which is further in the review process.

"These are the minimum conditions we require in order to consider support."

Both projects would greatly increase the ability of oil companies to export crude oil through B.C. and via tanker to Asia, reducing reliance on the U.S. market.

The provincial government has found itself caught between a public deeply concerned about spill risks and enormous pressure from Alberta and the federal government to allow a new westward outlet for Canadian oil.

"We want a fair share of the benefits in order to be considered partners in a project like this," Lake said. "Given that British Columbia would shoulder 100 per cent of the marine risk and a significant portion of the land-based risk we don't feel the current approach to sharing these benefits is appropriate."

He did not spell out B.C.'s price on royalty sharing, but said that would rest on discussions between Premier Christy Clark and the prime minister and premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

"It doesn't matter what that number is if we don't have adequate environmental protection."

B.C. wants Ottawa to insist industry provide provide a bigger marine spill response? ? up from the current 70,000 barrel capacity to something closer to the 300,000 barrel spill response mandated by Alaska. (Spills larger than the local response threshold trigger mutual aid agreements with neighbouring states.)

The government also notes Alaska requires cleanup crews reach a spill site within 72 hours, while Canada's current 72-hour rule also allows travel time to reach a site, potentially adding days to a response.

The province also envisions a levy charged on each barrel of oil shipped that would ??as is done in Washington State ? help?fund cleanup responses.

A land-based industry spill response co-op will also be proposed, similar to the Western Canada Marine Response Corp. that's charged with offshore response.

Ship owner insurance and industry funding available for a spill response totals $1.3 billion in Canada, according to the province's findings, while the equivalent U.S. fund is approaching $4 billion.

Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Mary Polak said B.C.'s insistence on greater aboriginal participation and compliance with their rights does not extend to a First Nations veto over new pipelines.

Lake said B.C. can't simply make a yes-or-no decision on a project like Enbridge right now because the federal National Energy Board review is still unfolding and the project is evolving along the way.

He noted Enbridge last week committed to up to $500 million in further safety upgrades to Northern Gateway ??including thicker pipe walls than previously proposed as well as more round-the-clock spill monitoring staff along the route. That move followed a damning U.S. report on the company's 2010 spill in Michigan.

B.C.'s five preconditions are successful completion of the federal environmental review; a world-leading marine oil spill prevention, response and recovery system; world-leading land spill prevention and response measures; the addressing of aboriginal and treaty rights, including First Nation participation and benefits; and a "fair share" of the fiscal and economic benefits of a proposed heavy oil project that reflects the elevated risk to B.C.

There are doubts as to whether B.C. could block a federally approved pipeline if it wants to.

Lake noted that even then Enbridge would require dozens of provincial regulatory approvals, which he said would be carefully considered.

The $5.5-billion Enbridge project includes one pipeline carrying heavy oil west to Kitimat and a second one to import condensate used to thin the bitumen.

Kinder Morgan's $4-billion Trans Mountain twinning would boost its capacity from 300,000 barrels per day now to 750,000. Most would go to export, bringing 300 oil tankers a year through Burrard Inlet.

The province calculates only eight per cent of the tax benefits would flow to B.C. while it would bear 58 per cent of the land-based risk and all the marine spill risk.

No change to Enbridge pipeline will sway NDP: Dix

NDP leader Adrian Dix, who has vowed to pursue a legal strategy to block the Enbridge project, said his party will continue to oppose it ??no matter what deal might be struck to steer benefits to B.C. or reduce risks.

"We remain serene and determined to take steps to oppose this pipeline, which we don't see as being in British Columbia's interests," he said.

B.C. is just 10 months away from a provincial election that could elect the NDP, which opposes Northern Gateway under any circumstances but has yet to define a position on the Trans Mountain expansion.

Dix said Northern Gateway is a non-starter because it would require consenting to oil tanker traffic on the north coast.

Dix also accused the government of belatedly trying to catch up to public opposition after it ceded jurisdiction for the environmental review process to Ottawa and then failed to intervene earlier in the Northern Gateway review when it could have still tabled evidence.

"They gave up our jurisdiction, they missed the deadline for evidence," Dix said.

"Now having been pressured by us but mostly by tens of thousands of people ??business groups, environmental groups and First Nations ??and they feel they have to take some step to show they're defending British Columbians' interest."

Several environmental groups responded saying no amount of safeguards will offset the damage of a serious spill, especially one involving heavy oil sands crude.

The Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart Phillip said most First Nations remain deeply opposed to the Enbridge pipeline, adding "it?s not about the money, it?s about the environment."

Dix said it was too soon for the NDP to take a stand on Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain twinning because the project has not yet been formally proposed.

BC Conservative leader John Cummins said his party would also try to negotiate a benefits sharing deal for oil that moves through B.C.

Tour champ Wiggins turns focus to Olympics

PARIS (AP) ? After making history in Paris, Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins is heading home to London in the hopes he can cap off his tremendous run of success with an Olympic gold medal.

The first Briton to win cycling's showcase event will start the Olympic time trial Aug. 1 as a big favorite for the gold medal, after dominating the event twice during the Tour de France.

The 32-year-old Londoner showed during the Tour that he can beat all comers in the race-against-the-clock, even after 2,175 miles of racing over three weeks in one of the ultimate endurance tests in all of sports.

After donning his winner's yellow jersey on the Champs-Elysees, Wiggins immediately began turning his focus to his Olympic race in just over a week. He even promised to forgo the Tour winner's traditional glass of champagne.

"Everything turns to the Olympics and I'll be out on the bike tomorrow and I've got an Olympic time trial to try and win," Wiggins said.

Sacrificing the traditional Tour winner's party was difficult but necessary, Wiggins said, because the Olympic gold "is a higher priority than anything else."

"It's a little weird to leave Paris without a party because it would be nice to spend time with the team and really enjoy it," Wiggins said.

Mark Cavendish, Wiggins' teammate on Team Sky, also is aiming to transition quickly from Parisian boulevards to English lanes.

The world champion from Britain's Isle of Man wants to follow up his dominating sprint victory on the Champs-Elysees on Sunday with a win in the Olympic road race on July 28. If anything, Cavendish is even more heavily favored to win the road race than Wiggins is in the time trial.

Regarded as the fastest man on a bike, the road world champion has not been as successful this year as in previous Tours. He kept his personal ambitions somewhat in check to put Wiggins in yellow during the Tour.

He still won three stages along the way, taking his career total to 23 and putting him in fourth place at only 27 years old. Any other cyclist would consider that a very successful Tour, but Cavendish admitted he felt frustrated at times not being able to nab five or six stage victories as he has during his domination of sprints in recent years.

Cavendish knew before the Tour this year's race would not be set up for him. He spent the first half of the season training specifically for the road race at the London Olympics, losing 9 pounds to be able to tackle the nine climbs of Box Hill in Surrey on Saturday.

Wiggins enjoyed a perfect Tour from the start and secured the victory with a dominating performance in Saturday's final time trial to extend his already commanding lead.

And with Cavendish having sacrificed some opportunities for more stage wins along the way by helping his teammate protect the yellow jersey, Wiggins was all too happy to pay him back over the final miles of the race ? normally a time when the winner is merely cruising along and already receiving congratulations from other riders.

"It's hard to take in as it happens," Wiggins said. "Every lap of the Champs-Elysees was goose-pimple stuff. We had a job to do with Mark today and we were all motivated to do that so it made it go a lot quicker. The concentration was high and for Mark to finish it off like that ... well, it couldn't get any better."

Cavendish ? widely regarded as the best sprinter in the world ? won the final stage of the Tour for the fourth year in a row. After Wiggins pulled back, Edvald Boasson Hagen delivered the perfect lead-out for Cavendish to sprint away from his rivals at the end of the 74.6-mile stage. Cavendish accelerated coming out of the final corner, never looked back and raised four fingers as he crossed the line.

"That was incredible, what a sight," Cavendish said. "The yellow jersey, Brad Wiggins pulling at the end after Chris Froome had been riding. ... I just gave everything to the line, I wanted it so bad. It's the cherry on top of an amazing Tour for us."

Froome, another British rider on Team Sky, finished second overall. The last time two riders from the same nation finished first and second in the Tour was in 1984, when Frenchman Laurent Fignon defeated Bernard Hinault.

Wiggins congratulated his teammates after crossing the line, gave a big hug to his wife and clutched the hands of their children.

The lanky Wiggins blew kisses and bowed to a sea of union jacks.

After a soprano sang the British anthem, Wiggins thanked the crowd with a touch of British humor.

"Cheers, have a safe journey home, don't get too drunk," said Wiggins, who wrote in his autobiography about overcoming drinking problems after his early successes in the Velodrome.

Wiggins' father died four years ago after struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.

Cavendish became the first reigning world champion to win on the Champs-Elysees.

"It's been incredible," Cavendish said. "We've come in with the aim of winning the yellow jersey. We got first and second on GC. We've won six stages as a team. It's a very successful Tour for Team Sky. Maybe there would've been more opportunities for sprints, but we won six stages. We've raised the profile of British cycling and it's been an incredible thing to be a part of."

The seven stage wins was a record haul for British riders in the Tour, beating the previous record of six stage wins ? all by Cavendish ? in 2009.

This time the victories were divided up between Cavendish (3), Wiggins (2), David Millar (1) and Froome (1).

All four, with Ian Stannard, will compete in Saturday's road race on the opening day of the Olympics with the aim of propelling Cavendish to another triumph.

"We won seven stages in total, that's one out of three stages won by a British rider," Cavendish said. "The guys in the Olympic team have one more job to do, but it's been an incredible few weeks for us."

Official: Assault rifle jammed in Colorado attack

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ? The semiautomatic assault rifle used by the gunman in a mass shooting at a midnight showing of the latest Batman movie jammed during the attack, a federal law enforcement official told The Associated Press, which forced the shooter to switch to another gun with less fire power.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to in order to discuss the investigation, said the disabled weapon had a high-capacity ammunition magazine. Police have said that a 100-round drum magazine was recovered at the scene and that such a device would be able to fire 50 to 60 rounds a minute.

That account of what happened inside the Century 16 theater emerged with other details of a suspect described as a budding scientist, brimming with potential, who pursued a graduate program even as he planned the attack with "calculation and deliberation," police said Saturday.

James Holmes, 24, received shipments that authorities believe armed him for battle and were used to booby trap his home with dozens of bombs.

In Aurora, investigators spent hours Saturday removing explosive materials from inside Holmes' apartment a day after police said he opened fire and set off gas canisters in a theater minutes into a premiere of the "The Dark Knight Rises." The massacre left 12 people dead and 58 injured.

His apartment was rigged with jars of liquids, explosives and chemicals that were booby trapped to kill "whoever entered it," Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said, noting it would have likely been one of his officers.

Holmes received several mail deliveries over four months to his home and school and bought thousands rounds of ammunition on the Internet.

"He had a high volume of deliveries," Oates said. "We think this explains how he got his hands on the magazine, ammunition," he said, as well as the rigged explosives in his apartment.

"What we're seeing here is evidence of some calculation and deliberation," Oates added.

Inside the apartment, FBI Special agent James Yacone said bomb technicians neutralized what he called a "hypergolic mixture" and an improvised explosive device containing an unknown substance. There also were multiple containers of accelerants.

"It was an extremely dangerous environment," Yacone said at a news conference, noting that anyone who walked in would have sustained "significant injuries" or been killed.

By late Saturday afternoon, all hazards had been removed from the Holmes' apartment and residents in surrounding buildings were allowed to return home, police said.

The exception was Holmes' apartment building, where authorities were still collecting evidence. Inside the apartment, authorities covered the windows with black plastic to prevent onlookers from seeing in. Before they did, a man in an ATF T-shirt could be seen measuring a poster on a closet that advertised a DVD called "Soldiers of Misfortune." The poster showed several figures in various positions playing paintball, some wearing masks.

About 8 p.m. Saturday, police left the apartment building carrying a laptop computer and a hard drive.

While authorities continued to refuse to discuss a possible motive for one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history, details about Holmes' background as a student and would-be scientist trickled out.

Holmes had recently withdrawn from a competitive graduate program in neuroscience at the University of Colorado Denver, where he was one of six students at the school to get National Institutes of Health grant money. He recently took an intense three-part, oral exam that marks the end of the first year of the four-year program there, but university officials would not say if he passed, citing privacy concerns. The university said Holmes gave no reason for his withdrawal, a decision he made in June.

"The focus of the program is on training outstanding neuroscientists and academicians who will make significant contributions to neurobiology," the university said. The doctoral program usually takes five to seven years to complete, it said.

In a resume posted on Monster.com, Holmes listed himself as an "aspiring scientist" and said he was looking for a job as a laboratory technician.

The resume, first obtained in Holmes' home state of California by The Press-Enterprise in Riverside, paints a picture of a brilliant young man brimming with potential: He worked as a summer intern at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla in 2006 and mapped the neurons of Zebra finches and studied the flight muscles of hummingbirds while an undergraduate at the University of California, Riverside.

He also worked as a cabin counselor to underprivileged children at a summer camp in Los Angeles in 2008. In a statement, Camp Max Straus confirmed Holmes had worked there for eight weeks. The camp provided no other detail about Holmes but said such counselors are generally responsible for the care and guidance of roughly 10 children.

Neighbors and former classmates in California said although Holmes was whip-smart, he was a loner who said little and was easily forgotten ? until this week.

Mary Muscari, a criminology professor at Regis University in Denver who studies mass killings, said she was not surprised Holmes was studying neuroscience and mental disorders.

"It could be he was interested in that because he knows there's something different in him," she said.

Holmes was in solitary confinement for his protection at a Denver-area county detention facility, held without bond on suspicion of multiple counts of first-degree murder. He was set for an initial hearing on Monday and has been appointed a public defender.

Among the deceased victims was a 6-year-old girl and a man who died on his 27th birthday and a day before his wedding anniversary. Families grieved and waited at hospitals, which reported at least seven still in critical condition Saturday and others with injuries that likely are permanent.

Veronica Moser-Sullivan, 6, had gone to the movies with her mother, who was drifting in and out of consciousness in a hospital intensive care unit, bullets lodged in her throat and a gunshot wound to her abdomen.

"Nobody can tell her about it," Annie Dalton said of her niece, Ashley Moser. "She is in critical condition, but all she's asking about is her daughter."

Veronica had just started swimming lessons on Tuesday, Dalton said.

"She was excited about life as she should be. She's a 6-year-old girl," her great aunt said.

Another victim, 27-year-old Matt McQuinn, was killed after diving in front of his girlfriend and her older brother to shield them from the gunfire, said his family's attorney, Rob Scott of Dayton, Ohio.

Alex Sullivan had planned a weekend of fun, first ringing in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" and then celebrating his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him."

President Barack Obama, who called in his weekly radio address for prayer and reflection on the rampage, was scheduled to travel to Colorado on Sunday to visit with the families of victims.

During the attack early Friday, Holmes used the military-style semiautomatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol to open fire on the unsuspecting theater-goers, Oates. Holmes had bought the weapons at local gun stores within the past two months. He recently purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the Internet, the chief said.

Holmes also bought an urban assault vest, two magazine holders and a knife for just over $300 on July 2 from an online supplier of tactical gear for police and military personnel, according to the company.

Chad Weinman, CEO of TacticalGear.com, said his company processes thousands of orders each day, and there was nothing unusual in the one that Holmes placed.

"Everything Mr. Holmes purchased on July 2 is commercially available," Weinman said, adding he was "appalled" that the material was sold to Holmes before the shooting.

The Batman movie, the last in the trilogy starring Christian Bale, opened worldwide Friday with midnight showings in the U.S. "The Dark Knight Rises" earned $30.6 million in Friday morning midnight screenings and according to industry estimates roughly $75 million on that day. That put it on track for a weekend total of around $165 million, which would be the second-highest opening weekend ever, following "The Avengers."

The shooting was the worst in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist was charged with killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

Murdoch resigns from News Corp. subsidiary boards

LONDON (AP) ? Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has resigned from a number of News Corp. subsidiary boards in Britain and the United States, a spokeswoman confirmed Saturday.

Murdoch stepped down as a director of NI Group, Times Newspaper Holdings and News Corp. Investments in the U.K., said Daisy Dunlop, who speaks on behalf of News Corp.'s British arm, News International.

"This is nothing more than a corporate housecleaning exercise prior to the company split," a News International statement said.

The statement was referring to News Corp.'s announcement in late June that the giant would separate its publishing and media and entertainment businesses into two distinct, publicly traded companies.

It was not immediately clear which of News Corp.'s U.S. boards Murdoch had left.

What women really want in men - iZimbabwe

The perfect man eats meat, drives an Audi and phones his mum twice a week, a poll of women revealed.

The ideal fella also drinks beer, not wine or spirits, and earns ?48 000 (or a whopping R615 360) a year.?He will also be six feet tall, have short dark hair and smart dress sense.

Vegetarians were a no-no, whilst being clean shaven and with a smooth chest, according to the poll of 2000 women by luxury clothing brand Austin Reed.

A spokesman for Austin Reed said:? "It would seem that women have high expectations when it comes to the perfect man.

"How a man is presented is obviously going to be a huge part of that.

"Whilst women don?t want a man to be too preened, they would like him to be stylish and up to date with current trends.

"It also nice to see that women favour a smart appearance, as opposed to sportswear."

The study also found the ideal man should also have a degree and hold down a decent job.?A demanding 15 per cent said they would insist on a suitor having at least a master?s degree or a PHD.?But 70 per cent of girls said they would prefer to date a man who earned more than them.

The poll also revealed girls don?t like their other half to be too "deep" with 43 percent preferring their chap to joke around and have a laugh rather than enjoy in-depth conversations.?Although 86 percent of women want a man who is sensitive, 64 percent only want him to say "I love you" when he really means it.

The poll found 39 percent of women would want her man to love shopping, but a third said they would like a man to leave the shopping side of things to her.?Interestingly, women would rather her ideal man enjoy watching sport at the pub than watch soap operas and reality TV shows with them.

Surprisingly two thirds of women would rather Mr Perfect admitted it when he is eyeing up other girls, rather than trying to cover it up.?Other ?must haves? were that the ideal man should hold a driving licence, must be able to swim and be able to ride a bike.?And girls like a handy man ? the poll found that he should be able to change a car tyre, be able to knock down a door in an emergency and competently rewire a plug.

But it's not all about being a macho man ??Mr Right?also has to phone his mother regularly and cry during films

A spokesman for Austin Reed added: "Women certainly know what they want when it comes to that dream man.

"Some of the criteria in the list is pretty superficial and it doesn?t really matter if every man doesn?t tick all the boxes.

"But on face value you have to be?attracted to a man?and how a man presents himself is going to one of the first things you notice and key to the level of attraction.

First peanuts, now eggs. Doctors have reversed allergies in some children and teens by giving them tiny daily doses of problem foods, gradually training their immune systems to accept them.

In the best test of this yet, about a dozen kids were able to overcome allergies to eggs, one of the most ubiquitous foods, lurking in everything from pasta and veggie burgers to mayonnaise and even marshmallows. Some of the same doctors used a similar approach on several kids with peanut allergies a few years ago.

Don't try this yourself, though. It takes special products, a year or more and close supervision because severe reactions remain a risk, say doctors involved in the study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

"This experimental therapy can safely be done only by properly trained physicians," says a statement from Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the federal agency that sponsored the study.

It didn't work for everyone, and some dropped out of the study because of allergic reactions. But the results "really do show there is promise for future treatment" and should be tested now in a wider group of kids, said the study's leader, Dr. A. Wesley Burks, pediatrics chief at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

More than 2 percent of young children have egg allergies, suffering wheezing and tight throats or even life-threatening reactions if they eat any egg, Burks said. Many will outgrow this by age 4 or 5, and more will by the time they are teens, but 10 to 20 percent never do. The big worry is that these kids will eat eggs as an ingredient in a food they don't realize contains them, and have a severe reaction. Training a child's immune system to tolerate even small amounts of egg to prevent this was the goal of the study.

It enrolled 55 children ages 5 to 18. Forty were given tiny daily amounts of powdered egg white, the part that usually causes the allergy. The other 15 were given cornstarch ? a dummy treatment ? for comparison. The amounts were increased every two weeks until kids in the treatment group were eating about one third of an egg each day.

They periodically went to their doctors to try eating eggs. They failed the test if a doctor could see any symptoms such as wheezing.

At about a year, none receiving the dummy treatment passed the egg challenge. Those on the egg white powder fared better.

"At the end of the year, half of them passed. At the end of two years, 75 percent of them passed," Burks said.

Next, he went a step further, to see if participants could maintain tolerance without the daily powder. Those who passed the second test stopped using the powder, avoided eggs entirely for four to six weeks, then tried eating eggs again as they wished. Eleven of the 30 kids were able to do this with no problem.

The treatment worked for 10-year-old Nicholas Redmond of Huntersville, N.C., near Charlotte. Avoiding eggs has been "a huge problem," said his father, Chris Redmond. Now Nicholas has some egg nearly every day to maintain his tolerance, which his father finds terribly ironic.

"You spend 2 1/2 years avoiding eggs" and now have to make sure he gets some, Chris Redmond said.

Nicholas said the hardest part of his allergy was turning down birthday treats at school.

"I would say 'no thank you' and I had this little treat box with stuff filled for class parties," he said.

Now, "I can have eggs in cake and cookies" ? if they don't contain peanuts, he said. He's also allergic to those, and will start sensitization therapy for peanuts next month.

So How Do You Weigh Things In Zero-Gravity? [Video]

With extremely controlled and strict diets, it's not like astronauts have to worry about gaining too much weight on the space station. But have you ever stopped and wondered how you would actually measure mass in a weightless environment? After all, the entire concept of weight and scales is entirely dependent on gravity. More »
