Pat Powell, 30, of Atlanta, buys a Powerball lottery ticket at a convenience store, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012, in Atlanta. "I think my odds are zero to zero," says Powell "I don't think I'm going to win but I'll just join the hype. If I did win, I'd open up my own business, an internet caf? in the West Indies and have a learning center here in Georgia. I'll invest and try to be as smart with it as I can with it. I will say for the past 3 days, for whatever reason, I've been thinking about winning this money and what I'd do with it. With 40.3 million people in the United States being age 65 or older in 2010 ? a number that is expected to double by 2050 ? where to house elderly parents and grandparents who have increasing medical needs but still want to retain their independence might have some families stumped. That?s why a Virginia-based company has developed ?granny pods.?
The Washington Post recently featured the ?temporary family health-care structures,? which can be located in a family?s backyard. You might be thinking what 88-year-old?Viola Baez thought when her family invested in a backyard MedCottage.
?You?re throwing me out! You?re sending me out to a doghouse!? Baez said, according to the Post.
Baez might not have initially wanted to reside in the $125,000, high-tech cottage but into it she went.
The company ? N2Care ? that creates the cottages was started by?Rev. Kenneth J. Dupin. The?Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center helped design them, according to the Post.
?Today, as 78 million Baby Boomers prepare for their senior years ? potentially straining nursing homes and government-funded health care programs ? we?ve taken a significant step forward in redefining the role of family in healthcare,? Dupin said in a statement earlier this year. ?The first placement with a family validates our vision ? to develop an alternative model for healthcare.?
Features of the 288-square-foot cottages include electricity and water; a kitchen that has a medication dispenser; and a bedroom for the patient as well as an extra space for caregivers when necessary. But that?s not all the bells and whistles. The website describes further:
Using smart robotic features, it can monitor vital signs, filter the air for contaminants, and communicate with the outside world very easily. Sensors alert caregivers to problems, and medication reminders are provided via computers. Technology also provides entertainment options including music, literature and movies.
The Post reported that even the floor is specially designed to be cushioned in case someone falls. They demonstrate this by dropping an egg from a height of 7 feet onto the floor. They then drop it from 5 inches onto a hard surface to prove the egg was real.
Here?s a video tour of a MedCottage:
This also isn?t the only high-tech home care facility for elderly family members. The Post reported the market is growing for similar homesteads:
Several firms have entered the market for?auxiliary dwelling units, or ADUs, as they?re known in the building industry. These include?FabCab, a Seattle-based company that makes ADUs and full-size homes.?Practical Assisted Living Solutions, or PALS, a firm based in Meriden, Conn., makes freestanding modules; and the?Home Store, which is headquartered in Whately, Mass., sells modular ?in-law? additions called ?Elderly Cottage Housing Opportunity? additions.
As for how Baez adjusted to the home she thought was like a dog house, the Post noted that she seems to be adjusting and her family takes it as a good sign that she calls it ?my place.?
Read more details about the MedCottage in the Washington Post?s feature here or on its website here. See a slideshow of photos of Baez?s ?granny pod? in by the Washington Post here.

Russian news Pravda?s Xavier Lerma said that with the re-election of Barack Obama, ?The Communists have won in America,? but he goes onto say that they failed miserably in Russia as Vladimir Putin was re-elected as President. Lerma writes the with the election of Putin the New World Order is kept out of Russia, while ?America continues to repeat the Soviet mistake.?
During Obama?s first term in office Vladimir Putin was the Prime Minister of Russia and had given a speech in 2009 about avoiding the Soviet mistake of militarization. He said with regards to the economy and a huge military build up, ??instead of solving the problem, militarization pushes it to a deeper level. It draws away from the economy immense financial and material resources, which could have been used much more efficiently elsewhere.? Apparently no one was listening.
Additionally Lerma went on to say that Obama was re-elected to a second term by ?an illiterate society.? He pointed out the lies that Obama engages in as he talks of lower taxes while raising them and gives speeches about love and peace in the world while promoting wars. I can?t say that I disagree with him on this.

After gastric bypass surgery, diabetes goes away for some people?often even before they lose much weight. So does that mean gastric surgery ?cures? diabetes? Not necessarily, according to the largest community-based study of long-term diabetes outcomes after bariatric surgery. For most people in the study, e-published in advance of print in Obesity Surgery, diabetes either never remitted after gastric surgery or relapsed within five years.
Among the two thirds of the study?s patients whose diabetes at first went away, more than a third re-developed diabetes again within five years after gastric surgery. After adding in the one quarter of patients whose diabetes never remitted after surgery, most (56 percent) of the study?s patients had no long-lasting remission of their diabetes following gastric surgery. However, when diabetes did go away, the research team extrapolated, it stayed away for a median of eight years.
Which kinds of obese people with type 2 diabetes are likely to get the most benefit from gastric surgery? ?Our results suggest that, after gastric surgery, diabetes stays away for longer in those people whose diabetes was less severe and at an earlier stage at the time of surgery,? said principal investigator David E. Arterburn, MD, MPH, a general internist and associate investigator at Group Health Research Institute. ?Gastric surgery isn?t for everyone,? he said. ?But this evidence suggests that, once you have diabetes and are severely obese, you should strongly consider it, even though it doesn?t seem to be a cure for most patients.?
The multi-site study tracked 4,434 adults at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Kaiser Permanente Southern California, and HealthPartners for 14 years: from 1995 to 2008. The research arms of all three of these integrated health care delivery systems?and Group Health Research Institute, where the study?s results were analyzed?belong to the HMO Research Network. The patients had type 2 diabetes that was either controlled with medication or else uncontrolled, and they were also obese enough to be candidates for gastric bypass surgery.
?Diabetes is an increasingly common disease that tends to keep getting worse relentlessly,? Dr. Arterburn said. More than 25 million American adults have diabetes?and as populations age and keep gaining weight, 50 million are predicted to have it by 2050. Already, diabetes accounts for 5 percent of all U.S. health care spending. And it raises the risk of blindness, kidney disease, heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.
?Prevention is by far the best medicine for diabetes,? Dr. Arterburn said. ?Once you have diabetes, it?s really hard to get rid of. Attempts to treat it with intensive lifestyle changes and medical management have been disappointing.? For instance, the National Institutes of Health recently halted the Look AHEAD study of intensive lifestyle changes for people with diabetes. Despite improvements in risk factors like body weight, fitness, and blood pressure, sugar, and lipids, that study showed lifestyle changes did not lower the outcomes that matter most: heart attacks, strokes, and deaths.
?No wonder so many were excited to learn that diabetes can remit after gastric surgery?even, in some cases, before any significant weight loss?and many were hoping that gastric surgery might be a ?cure? for diabetes,? Dr. Arterburn said. ?Our study is the first major evidence that diabetes often recurs after gastric bypass surgery.? Still, he added, even after diabetes comes back, having had a long period of post-surgery remission is likely to have many positive effects, such as fewer complications of diabetes: less damage to eyes and kidneys, and fewer heart attacks, strokes, and deaths. The researchers are now funded by the National Institutes of Health to study that possibility in this same population. Dr. Arterburn is also leading a randomized controlled pilot trial of intensive behavioral treatment vs. gastric surgery at Group Health with colleagues from the University of Washington.
It?s still not clear whether diabetes relapse happens because of gaining weight back or because of underlying the progression of diabetes. But patients? weight?before and after surgery?was not strongly correlated with remission or relapse of diabetes in this population.

Five million Americans are among the long-term unemployed--those without a job for 27 weeks or longer--according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Another 7.3 million are looking for work, while the unemployment rate sits at 7.9 percent. Numbers aside, individual stories illustrate how America is affected. To see how joblessness hits home, Yahoo News asked unemployed workers to share their job-hunting stories. Here's one.
FIRST PERSON | I am 40 and live in Racine, Wis. I have been unemployed since I was 33. I try to find work, but I've been disabled since 27, and I do not collect Social Security or other income. On job applications, when I am asked if I have any disabilities, I answer yes.
I have even tried to travel to different states for employment. I am seeking employment where I can. I have tried Lowe's, Home Depot and other similar stores. All I get are letters saying I do not qualify for employment.
By trade, I am a tattoo artist, a job I have been very good at until I became disabled. I have shoulder impingement syndrome, which consists of some of the following: torn ligaments, torn tendons, bone spurs, bursitis and arthritis.
And constant pain. I feel the weather. I hardly sleep. I wish I could be somewhere else, as it is hard on my mind to deal with on a daily basis.
Still, I try to find work where I can in this tough economy, and I am on several lists to be called and never have been called to date.
I am too proud to try to get Social Security. I cannot even afford insurance to get my condition fixed. I even have applied for local state insurance to get the problem resolved so I can work again, always with no luck. So I have remained unemployed now for over 10 years and going.
I injured myself, and I am not able to lift more than 10 pounds at a time or stand or sit for long periods of time.
I just want a job so I can try to cover the medical expenses myself since I cannot get help. Surgery costs are around $18,000, which sounds pretty reasonable to me.
I am no stranger to hard work. Since 12, I cut grass, shoveled snow, painted houses and fences, swept chimneys, worked in heat treatment plants with dirt and oil, worked in the casting of hot metals, laid brick, made bathroom sinks, swept floors in factories, did drill-press work, sanding work, and worked at fast food places.
I do not lie to get jobs or hid my injury. I do want to work, but I worry now that my disability will mean I won't be hired by companies because they're afraid it will come back on them and their company.
I cannot afford private insurance as I do not have steady income. Now I find whatever I can do to reach my goal of paying for my own surgery.
It is a sad world when you live in pain, day in and day out, and you want and need to find work.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? While they would rather stay with their pets, many New Yorkers are taking advantage of the services of the Emergency Boarding Center in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn until they?re back on their feet.
As WCBS 880?s Marla Diamond reported, Shirley, a Canarsie, Brooklyn resident, dropped off her cat, Taco. But it wasn?t easy letting go.
LISTEN: WCBS 880?s Marla Diamond Reports
?I want to visit my cat every day,? she said.
Taco had been staying in a flooded-out basement, and his owner knew it was not good for his health.
?I don?t know what I would do if this wasn?t here, like, what would we be doing with Taco?? Shirley said. ?I wouldn?t know what to do with him.?
Goldie, a 6-year-old tabby from Far Rockaway, ran away from her owner, Campbell Emanuel, during Superstorm Sandy.
?She got out somehow and we couldn?t find her,? Emmanuel said. ?We?re lucky ? we went back into the house today? and the cat was there.
As of Saturday, the temporary shelter had 40 cats, 60 dogs, a parakeet, a ferret and a rabbit. All get checked out before they are boarded by Dr. Janet Ficcara, a Manhattan veterinarian volunteering her services.
?I fear for the animals that might still be out there that are hunkering down behind the house, where their house used to be, under a car,? Ficcara said.
The Emergency Boarding Center, at 1508 Herkheimer St., is the last resort for owners of the beloved pets, said Jessica Rubin of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
?These animals are really just for owners to board here for a temporary basis,? she said. ?It?s absolutely a pet hotel, and we?ll take care of them for free, so no charge to the owner, and they?ll get the care they need while they?re getting back on their feet.?
The ASPCA set up the 20,000 square-foot shelter in conjunction with Animal Care & Control of New York City and other city agencies, as well as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Veterinary Response team. It was funded by a $500,000 donation from celebrity chef and talk show host Rachael Ray.
The shelter is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Those who need to bring their pets to the facility should call the Hurricane Sandy Pet Hotline, at Hurricane Sandy pet hotline (347) 573-1561.

* Sharp enlargement of mercantile deposits over past decade
* Such deposits can be used by regulators to inject money
* Cash injections in late 2012 to strech record level
* PBOC might not need to cut RRR for rest of year
By Lu Jianxin and Pete Sweeney
SHANGHAI, Nov 22 (Reuters) ? Government revenues deposited
in Chinese blurb banks have grown so vast that regulators
have been means to use them as a financial process tool, increasing
the pointing with that Beijing can conduct growth.
By sensibly auctioning supervision deposits and by
directly redistributing income lifted from taxes and fees to
companies and supervision departments, a Ministry of Finance
(MOF) is now means to use supervision assets to influence
short-term appropriation costs in a wider economy.
This means that marketplace players who guard a central
bank?s open marketplace operations for clues as to a instruction of
monetary process contingency keep another eye on a cycle of funds
moving in and out of accounts tranquil by a MOF.
?Fiscal deposits have spin a vital cause to change the
central bank?s financial process as good as income markets,? pronounced a
senior merchant during a Chinese state-owned bank in Beijing.
?In months when a marketplace is brief of liquidity, the
ministry can also use supervision deposition auctions to assistance the
central bank boost income supply. In this sense, mercantile deposits
are indeed being used as a financial apparatus as well.?
THE WAY IT WORKS
Chinese companies and other institutions, that compensate taxes
and fees to a MOF and a internal offices, contingency deposition these
payments into accounts during designated blurb banks in the
form of mercantile deposits. Such deposits can?t be used by
commercial banks and play no purpose in financial policy.
However, 3 times per month, a blurb banks hand
over all of these deposits to a People?s Bank of China (PBOC),
where they spin partial of a PBOC?s financial base. This base
money can be possibly defended in times of additional liquidity, or
pushed behind into a complement in a form of MOF spending, deposit
auctions and refunds on taxation overpayments.
A diminution in mercantile deposits on blurb banks? balance
sheets therefore implies some-more income has been handed over to the
state and is now accessible for income injection.
On months when mercantile deposits drop, a PBOC customarily has
less need to inject short-term income into a complement in a form
of retreat repurchase agreements, given income is entering the
system by channels tranquil by a MOF.
There are transparent anniversary characteristics to a upsurge of
funds.
In December, for example, a MOF typically injects large
amounts of income in a form of taxation refunds, subsidies to
government institutions and income transfers to companies in
pillar industries.
Deposits also tend to diminution in March, June, September,
and November, while other months customarily uncover net fiscal
deposits increasing, tightening income supply in a banking
system.
RECORD INJECTION
An bargain of a MOF?s position on any given month
can be simply subsequent from monthly information on blurb banks?
end-month mercantile deposits published by a PBOC.
The method accessible a mercantile over-abundance of 829.6 billion yuan
($133.2 billion) in a initial 10 months of 2012, and is set to
generate some-more over-abundance in a final dual months.
A Reuters research of a information shows that a MOF is likely
to siphon a record high 1.6 trillion yuan into a complement in the
last dual months of this year. Data suggests it injected slightly
lesser amounts during a same duration given 2008, compared to
under 580 billion yuan in 2007 and reduction than 220 billion yuan in
2002 during a same period.
The supervision has designed to record an altogether budgetary
deficit of 800 billion yuan for 2012, implying that a entirety
of a mercantile over-abundance will be plowed behind into a economy,
supplemented by additional necessity spending.
THE AUCTION MECHANISM
The impact of supervision spending on subsidies, refunds and
transfers is formidable to magnitude precisely, though a auction of
deposits combined by supervision revenues is easier to manage.
Such deposits are auctioned for specific durations of time -
usually between 3 and 6 months ? definition regulators and
money marketplace participants can design how prolonged a income will
be in a system.
This year?s auction volume for such deposits is equivalent
to around half of a sum volume of open marketplace operations
conducted by a executive bank, injecting a record 690 billion
yuan into blurb banks so distant this year, adult from 450 billion
yuan in 2011 and 170 billion yuan in 2008.
This means that even as a PBOC has mutated its
open-market operations to concentration roughly exclusively on a usage
of retreat repos with tenors of reduction than one month to manage
the interbank income supply, it has a massive
pool of accessible deposits to tumble behind on if necessary.
The coherence this toolset provides China?s economic
managers has authorised them to conflict calls to revoke a reserve
requirement ratio (RRR) during blurb banks for a third time
this year, even as world?s second-largest economy slowed to its
slowest in 3 years in a third quarter.
This in spin authorised regulators to continue to fight
inflation ? that regulators fear would be aggravated by another
RRR cut given such cuts inject income into a complement that
cannot simply be pulled behind out ? but formulating a liquidity
crisis.
As a result, traders pronounced that short-term income rates for
the benchmark seven-day bond repurchase rate have
remained in gentle domain around or subsequent 3 percent even
as a executive bank has authorised income to empty from a system
through open marketplace operations for a final 3 weeks.
Traders design rates to sojourn fast or even diminution in
most partial of December.
Although 2013?s bill will not be motionless until subsequent March,
if China?s economy continues to recover, mercantile revenues will
likely arise further, giving a Ministry of Finance even more
firepower to change rates.

In 2011, even though the U.S economy was sluggish, shopping grew by 15% over the previous year. In addition, about 35% of Americans now have smartphones which enable them to purchase goods and services over the internet and this figure is expected to rise significantly in subsequent years. In actual fact, about half of smartphone users have used their phones for one purchase or the other. On Christmas day of 2011 alone, about 6.8 million iOs and Android smartphones were activated. Top internet retailer, Amazon, recorded a whooping net sale of $48.08 billion in 2011 which represents 40.6% increase over $32.20 billion recorded in 2010. This figure is expected to rise in 2012 and subsequent years. What then is the implication of all these to physical retailing?
Since many people now decide to shop over the internet due to the benefits derivable in doing so like convenience, easy access to market, price comparison, avoidance of crowd, better prices and so on, can we really say that that the traditional way of shopping is being threatened? In my own opinion, technology will enhance the traditional method and not kill it. The popularity of video cassette recorder (VCR) in the 80's was seen by many as a threat to movie theaters then, but today, the film industry has been strengthened by the new technology and the demand for films has increased.
Moreover, when the email became very popular, a lot people thought that the traditional postal service would die, but today, it is waxing stronger. The point I'm driving at here is that, if traditional shop owners can embrace new technology, shopping on the internet would not be a threat to them but a blessing.
If physical retailers can monitor shopping behavior through the use of Wi-Fi signals from smartphones, they would be able to compete favorably in a fast-changing world. They can use technology to measure loyalty, make better staffing decisions, improve store layouts, reduce wait times in checkout lines and so on. Online shopping has come to stay but it is not a threat to traditional shopping because many consumers still value some of its features like quality of customer service, the experience of trying and buying products, how products are displayed and so on.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to bring the US economy an economic boost with up to $240bn in reconstruction and replacement purchases and add 0.5% to the countries GDP next year, surpassing the $50bn loss it caused.
?Construction costs to rebuild all that was lost will be more than simply replacement because a lot of the work will also involve fortifying structures,? Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at Economic Outlook told Bloomberg. ?We?ll see construction ramped up, and that?s going to bring in jobs and an increase in demand for material of all sorts, and that?s going to further stimulate the economy.?
Most of the reconstruction projects worth from $140 billion to $240 billion will take place in the first quarter of 2013, adding as much as 0.5% to growth, Goldman Sachs forecast. The economic boost from housing construction ?would take place over several years," based on the experience of Hurricane Katrina, which struck the Gulf Coast in 2005, David Crowe, chief economist for National Association of Home Builders said.
Families spend an average of $8,000 on furniture, appliances and landscaping for a new home, according to Crowe.
In this regard, home improvement retailers and construction companies would be among the winners after Sandy as their sales surge.? Home Depot Inc. has seen its share rally 6.8% to a 12-year high, while shares of its rival Lowe rose 10% to a more than five-year high.?
However, not all sectors will win back their losses, experts say. Economic output will slump by about $20 billion because ?airlines don?t get those flights back and restaurants don?t get those meals back,? said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody?s Analytics Inc
Estimates of insured damage caused by Sandy range from $7 billion to $25 billion. When lost wages and sales are added, the total comes to $50 billion, according to catastrophe risk modeler Equecat Inc.? Sandy could cost the US economy up to $50bn or 0.5% in the fourth quarter after it disrupted industrial production, retail sales and employment, according to economists at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. If accurate, that estimate would put Sandy behind hurricane Katrina in 2005, which caused losses worth $146 bn.
Sandy made landfall on October 29 near Atlantic City, New Jersey, and claimed more than 100 lives in 10 states. New York City and the New Jersey coast, one of the most densely populated regions of the country, suffered the most damage. More than 20,000 flights were cancelled and about 8.5 million homes and businesses from South Carolina to Maine were left without power. In New York stock trading was shut for weather for the first time since 1888, while economic activity in the city dipped 20%.

M23, the eight-month-old rebel group made up of soldiers who defected from the Congolese army, has pushed beyond Goma, the bustling regional capital of eastern Congo, which fell to the fighters earlier this week.
On Friday, the rebels patrolled the town of Sake, the next town on the road south from Goma. They manned checkpoints, drank vodka in local bars and let the corpses of Congolese soldiers rot in the streets. One of the soldier's bodies bore an execution-style bullet wound to the temple.
AP photojournalist Jerome Delay is in the region covering the conflict, and has been witness to tens of thousands of civilians fleeing along a stretch of road to Goma, carrying mattresses and cooking pots on their heads, as well as live chickens, goats, and babies bundled on their backs. The town of Sake was nearly deserted. A lone father returned to his empty house. He had fled on Thursday when the shooting erupted, but lost track of his four children in the scramble to get out of town. The youngest are just 2 and 4 years old, he said.

(Reuters) - Whether U.S. shoppers and workers like or loathe the encroachment of the holiday shopping season into Thanksgiving Day, one thing is for certain - the trend is not going away.
Even as stores fight charges of spreading holiday creep instead of cheer, retailers are making money out of moving the start of the holiday shopping season from "Black Friday" -- the day after Thanksgiving -- into Thanksgiving night, or even the Day itself.
"Not everybody's going to watch 12 hours of football on Thanksgiving Day. Most people, after 20 minutes of sitting at the dinner table, are ready to get out and do something. Why not cater to the people who are into the sport of shopping?" said Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst for market research firm NPD.
Retailers like Target Corp, Sears Holdings Corp and Toys R Us Inc have joined Wal-Mart and Gap Inc in staying open on what is a national holiday. Traditionally, stores had waited until Black Friday to make their big push.
There is mounting pressure from Wall Street as well.
"From an investor's standpoint if a retailer is not putting (in) extra hours while competitors are extending them, it would make me wonder how much they can participate in the race for the consumer dollar," said Ken Hemauer, a senior portfolio manager at Robert W. Baird & Co based in Milwaukee.
Between sales, profits and Wall Street expectations, not many think petitions like the one on change.org, asking Target to "save Thanksgiving" by staying shut that day will succeed. The petition had 355,570 supporters at last count.
And not everyone is complaining. A recent survey by the consulting firm Deloitte showed 23 percent plan to shop in stores on Thanksgiving Day - up from 17 percent in last year's survey.
Data on the impact of stores being open on Thanksgiving Day is hard to come by, but Alison Paul, vice chairman and U.S. Retail & Distribution lead Deloitte, said it was likely that sales made that day cut into demand later in the holiday season.
"It shifts spending," she said. "It doesn't create any more spending."
Still, retailers remaining closed on Thanksgiving risk losing out to competitors in the a battle for consumer dollars as the overall spending pie is expected to grow less than last year.
"The upside is not huge, but the downside could be," Paul said.
Industry watchdog National Retail Federation expects holiday sales this year to rise 4.1 percent to $586.1 billion, lower than the 5.6 percent rise in 2011.
A handful of chains like Best Buy Co, Macy's and Kohl's plan to wait to open at midnight on Black Friday, but they are notable for waiting.
"Most retailers have customers lining up in front of their stores for hours anyway (early on Black Friday or even very late in the night on Thanksgiving)," said Dan Butler, vice president, Merchandising and Retail Operations at the National Retail Federation. "If they are going to be there, they might as well be inside. It is silly to have your customers outside in cold, snowy weather."
DOORBUSTERS AND DOLLARS
In an economy that is blowing hot and cold, "doorbuster" deals and other discounts are the best bet stores have to hook customers.
"You're essentially increasing traffic. If you have some merchandise significantly marked down and can get people in through the door, there is a whole range of other products that they'll buy at your location," said Nick Jones, executive vice president, Retail Practice Lead at advertising agency Leo Burnett.
Jim Brownell, vice president Retail Industry Solutions for sourcing company GT Nexus said retailers were using the extra hours of sales to keep up the frenzy as the chase the dollars.
"The retailers are generating it (demand), the consumers aren't demanding it," said Brownell, who had worked with retailers like Williams-Sonoma Inc, Restoration Hardware and Gap.
"Retail is not growing very much, so we're not seeing much more money coming in in the season. It is really who's getting a bigger portion of the sales pie."
The trouble is, items on sale are low margin, so they do not bring in a lot of money unless volumes are high.
"Everybody's worried that the price sensitive customers will go to whoever's open first. They are worried about being late to the game," Eric Anderson, Hartmarx Professor of Marketing at Kellogg School of Management.
NRF's Butler said the number of shoppers ensures that retailers make a profit on that day.
"It is a profitable time for retailers. When they price their goods, even when they are on sales, they price them for profitability," he said.

As the saying goes, ?You can lead a horse to water, but you can?t make him drink,? the same holds true for the four-legged members of the family. Dogs often operate on a their own internal hunger cues and getting them to eat regular nutritious meals can be tricky. Watching your pooch skip dinner can be disconcerting, but what can you do and how serious is it?
Any time a normally enthusiastic dog who never skips a meal becomes reluctant to eat or refuses food, consult with your veterinarian. This could be a sign of an underlying illness. Especially if refusing food is accompanied by other clinical signs, prompt veterinary attention is warranted. Pet health insurance is an invaluable tool to ensure your pet gets the top notch care they need!
1. Don?t Create a Monster
Commonly, without meaning to, owners can create a picky-eater by coaxing their dogs to eat when they aren?t hungry. Take this example: Spot ate a Milkbone at 3pm, so he isn?t hungry for her dinner.? Mrs. Jones is concerned that Spot isn?t eating, so she adds a little of her pot roast on top of the kibble. Spot, of course, eats this with enthusiasm! Over time Spot learns that if he ignores his kibble at dinnertime, he will be rewarded with something even tastier from Mrs. Jones? plate.? In essence, Spot is training Mrs. Jones.
2. Picky Eating Leads to Obesity
The problem with this scenario is that is leads to obesity. Recent studies estimate that over half of our pets are overweight; obviously obesity is a growing problem with significant pet health implications. In the above story, Spot wasn?t eating because his body was telling him he wasn?t hungry. The highly desirable food overrode the lack of hunger and thus he overate, leading to weight gain. This creates a vicious cycle of refusing dog food, but eating treats and human food.
3.? Create Healthy Habits in Puppies
Preventing a finicky eater is best started at puppyhood. Get in the habit of feeding regular meals without a lot of snacking or table scraps. Don?t over feed. If food is leftover in the bowl at the end of the day, you are putting too much food in it! Talk with your veterinarian about how much you should be feeding. Often the guidelines on the back of the dog food bags can over estimate how much kibble should be fed. Calorie requirements and metabolism can vary greatly with your dog?s age, breed, lifestyle and level of exercise.
4. Retrain Your Older Dog
An adult dog with a history of finicky eating can be a little more challenging to convert. Especially in situations where the owner has associated feeding treats with love and reward, changing this can be hard. Try to resist using food to equate with love. Instead, have a mini-play session with a favorite toy, or go for a walk and have a cuddle together. Dogs are pretty easy to please! When attempting to convert a picky eater, realize that the first couple weeks will be the hardest. If Roscoe is used to a certain eating arrangement, he will undoubtedly be put off when this changes.
After determining how much kibble your pet should be eating in a day, break this into two meals. Put the first meal down in the morning, allow it to sit out for a period of time, then put it away. Don?t be surprised if he ignores it at first, remember, he is used to getting what he wants!? Then allow access to the pre-measured breakfast again at lunch time, again put it away if he continues to ignore it. At dinnertime, do the same thing. Allow a period of time with the kibble available, then remove it. Try to resist doctoring it,as this reinforces he refusal of plain food. Over time she will learn that if she doesn?t eat her meals when you feed them, you?ll take them away!? Most dogs will not starve themselves (this isn?t true for cats though!) and will eventually eat.
A finicky eater can be a challenge, but a nutritious diet and healthy body weight are so important to your pet?s health and longevity, that it should be taken seriously. In addition to regular veterinary visits and healthy eating habits, always consider having a pet health insurance policy as an additional way to keep your furry family members in tip top shape.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A former salesman who lost his job and ended up homeless admitted in a plea deal on Wednesday to burglarizing Steve Jobs' house and seven other homes in a crime spree capped by his break-in at the late Apple founder's Silicon Valley residence.
In return for his plea of "no contest," legally equivalent to a guilty plea in California, Santa Clara County prosecutors agreed to recommend that Kariem McFarlin, 35, be sentenced to no more than seven years and eight months in prison.
Jailed since his arrest in August, McFarlin would otherwise face a maximum penalty of more than 16 years behind bars when he returns to court for sentencing on January 17, his lawyer said.
McFarlin was originally charged with one count of burglary and one count of receiving stolen property for the July 17 break-in and theft that occurred at Jobs' home while the house was unoccupied and undergoing renovations.
More than $60,000 in jewelry, along with several computers and Jobs' wallet were stolen in the burglary, which came nine months after the high-tech executive had died at age 56 following a lengthy battle with cancer.
The house in Palo Alto, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, had briefly become a shrine for admirers who left flowers outside in the weeks after Jobs' death. McFarlin apparently had no idea the English country-style home belonged to Jobs when he entered the property, authorities said.
The investigation that followed led authorities to a storage locker where McFarlin had stashed stolen goods from previous burglaries he was found to have committed since March of 2011.
The various cases were combined, and he ultimately pleaded no contest to eight counts of first-degree burglary, including the Jobs break-in, and one count of receiving stolen property.
Like Jobs' house, McFarlin had singled out other homes that appeared temporarily vacant during construction or renovation in upscale San Francisco Bay-area communities. Authorities said McFarlin had spent the night in some of them.
A college graduate who once played football for San Jose State University, McFarlin had held steady jobs in sales for 15 years before ending up unemployed, defense attorney James Kellenberger told reporters after Wednesday's hearing.
"After he lost his job, he ended up homeless and living in a car," Kellenberger said.
Police initially tracked down McFarlin with help from Apple investigators, who noticed an iPad stolen from the Jobs house was connected to the company's servers on July 18, the morning after the burglary, according to court documents in the case.
The user of the iPad was re-installing the operating system, and by tracing the Internet connection, police found McFarlin's home in Alameda, just south of Oakland.
Shackled and dressed in green prison garb on Wednesday, McFarlin appeared expressionless through the proceedings and said little except to answer, "no contest," when asked how he would plead to the charges.
