Obama vs Romney: The Issues | S2Smagazine.com

With just hours left until Election Day, he's a recap of where President Barack Obama and GOP candidate Mitt Romney stand on the issues.

BIRTH CONTROL?AND?ABORTION

Obama: Supports access to abortion services and birth control, and his health care plan requires employers to cover the cost of contraceptives for women.

Romney: Stated that he will be a "pro-life president," and he wants to put limits on abortions. Expections would be made in cases of rape, incest and risk to the mother's life. However, he has supported access to them in the past. He's also stated that he wants to cut federal funding for Planned Parenthood.?

NATIONAL DEBT
Obama: Plans to cut the defecity by $4 trillion over the next decade. This would require an increase in the capital gains tax and raise taxes on households making more than $250,000 per year. Anyone making at least $1 million will pay a minium of 30 perect in income taxes.

Romney: Promised to cut $500 billion from the budget every year beteween now and 2016. He also plans to reduce spending to less than 20 percent of the U.S. ecoomy and balance the budget by 2020.

SAME SEX MARRIAGE
Obama: Supports legal recognition of same-sex marriage.

Romney: Opposes legal recognition of same sex marriage.

EDUCATION

Obama: Has passed waivers allowing schools to drop requirements set by No Child Left Behind.

Romney: Supported standards set by No Child Left Behind,

ENVIRONMENT

Obama: U.S. energy production numbers have gone up under his administration, and he wants to cut oil imports in half by 2020. He also drove up fuel economy standards, helping Americans to save money on gas.

Romney: Promises that the U.S. will become energy independent by 2020, no longer depending on sources outside of North America. He endorses using more domestic oil, gas and coal. Doesn't see green energy as a solid option yet and is dubious about the effects of climate change.

TAXES

Obama: Wants to increease taxes on the wealthy to make sure they're paying at least 30 percent of their income. However, he would like to extend the Bush-era tax cuts to anyone making less than $200,000 a year (less than $250,000 a year for couples)>

Romney: Wants to keep Bush-era tax cuts for all income levels in place at first. He'd eventually like to cut tax rates by another 20 percent across the board.

HEALTH CARE

Obama: Put the nation on the path to universal health care, creating a law that requires almost everyone to get health coverage. Under the law insurance companies are banned from denying covering to anyon with a pre-exisiting condition.

Romney: Wants to repeal "Obamacare," and model universal health care after the plan that Massachusettes ushered in while he was governor. He thinks health care policy should be driven by the states, not the federal government.

WAR

Obama: Ended the war in Iraq, but placed more troops in Afghanistan. He later began taking soldiers out of Aghanistan and plans to end the war there by 2014.

Romney: Also supports ending the war in Afghanistan by 2014, but would like to increase military spending to increase the strength of armed forces. This includes increasing the numbers of soldiers and warships, which would raise the Pentagon's budget by nearly $100 billion.
